For starters I've got a Winchester Model 70 Super Grade 30-06 with a very nice Leupold. Then a CZ75B and a Century CETME .308 that is one of the newer versions. Probably a couple AR builds.

For a while I've wanted to collect 4 iconic rifles from America's 20th century conflicts...Springfield 03, Garand, M1A and M16. I've got the M16 tribute, next up the M1A and Garand. Then I'll keep my eye out for an 03.

I never ever thought I’d sell a firearm. Then a few years back I sold one and the flood gates opened. Not to say I’m out of firearms but I’m at a number that if something comes in most likely something is going out. The firearms that seldom if ever get shot are constantly reconsidered for culling.

I would say you need a M16 not a tribute but I just had an eye opening conversation last night with a friend that’s buying a few items and drop in sears are now around 40k and 16s are 25-35k so now I’d say that’s a beautiful tribute!
I have a M1 garand that was very rough when I received it so I had fulton armory bring it back to better than new because it had zero collector value. You need to add an M1 carbine to the list. Mine is a very good Rock-Ola that’ll stay original.
I gave my M1A to my son before they were banned in MD and they are great rifles. Good luck with your gathering!

I had an M1 Carbine back when I was in the service. That was when you could buy the old surplus ones for $300 that are now going for $1,000+. I didn't really care for it. Obviously the M16 that I "built" is just PSA parts with period correct add-ons, but it's pretty close to the actual M16 that I used during my time in. The M1A is what I really want and have for years, just never got around to it. I think it's time.

Travis, how does the spc compare to a grendel? I'm debating what to get for a 16" woods hunting upper. ARC, Grendel, SPC are candidates.
A lesson. On being cheap and not really knowing what I'm doing. I want to try an offset dot for hunting where distance is close and reaction time is critical. I ordered a cheap cvlife dot and a 45° offset pic mount. Too close to my primary optic to sight the thing in. One of the adjustment screws faces the scope. And it's a plastic fantastic. First whack on a log when I fall and bust my ass on wet leaves will destroy it. Found a viper dot at a good price. Can sight it in without scope interference, but just barely enough space to turn it on/off, adjustment brightness. Ordered a 1" riser. Now plenty of space but it's way higher over bore than the scope. A half inch riser would probably do the trick. But fuck that. Ordered an Arisaka with the appropriate mounting plate. If I'd just ordered that and the viper to begin with it wouldn't have been significantly more $ and definitely significantly less time and aggravation.

I think the spc out performs the Grendel to maybe 300 yards? I’d Have to google it. The arc is better for long range. There is one guy on insta that shoots a bunch of coyotes and hogs and anecdotally is seeing more wounded stuff with the arc but I think he’s being more of a troll.

I’m going to be using the arc for the first time this year so I’m curious to see if it’s the wonder round everyone thinks it will be

I think I find spc a little more in store than the Grendel too but just check your stores. I generally just buy the 120sst by the case though. It’s damn accurate. For a 16” gun I’ve got a 6arc, my 6spc is 11.5 and I’ve never shot a Grendel.

Maybe I need to keep my 6.8 actually . It’s been my go to for like 12 years until I got bored last year. Just one of many times I’ve loaded the truck up with my 6.8spc.

I have wanted to get a few new oldies of a similar vein. I've got an M1 carbine, 1903a3 and AR platform stuff, but want to add a Garand and maybe a Tommy gun at some point just to have a couple of "military lite" kinda rifles.

I need to get some loads for my 6.8. I bought a barrel a while ago for a switch barrel setup and played with it some but just built a new upper with a wilson combat 11.3".

IMHO if you want to hunt with a small frame AR, the 6.8 is still where it's at. especially if you hand load. If you want to shoot subs there are better options, and if you want to punch paper at longer distances there are better options but for 25-300 yards, hard to beat the 6.8spc.

Dumb question, are firing pin retainers a standard cotter pin that I can get at a hardware store to have spares?

not an expert but I would guess that they are not or at least not built to very exacting specifications.

IMHO the best course of action is to keep an eye on Brownells and see when they are having a sale on their house brand stuff or free shipping and order a bunch of their spares kits, or if you need to order any other stuff. I've ordered 5-10 of their small parts kits and it's great when a spring goes flying and instead of searching for 30 minutes for it, I just open a little ziplock with a bunch of spare parts and grab what I need.
I just looked and evidently they got rid of their little spare parts kits or maybe they are redoing them but I"m sure others have them. Basically a lower parts kit without the fire control group (trigger), and grip. Brownells had them on sale for like $10 a while ago, so I bought like 5 of them to have spares. Plus a few of their bolt carrier completion kits, etc.

I find it fascinating that AR pattern rifles are the only guns commonly owned that have a floating firing pin. There's no way Stoner could bring that gun to market today with that design.

Actually it was midway that has the little pieces kits. Their AR Stoner brand. Like this one:

I figure it's cheap insurance to have a few spare retainers, extractors, maybe a firing pin.
What do folks think about enhanced/monolithic upper receivers? Already plotting my next AR. I know there's multiple companies making them. Seeking and Aero are in the same price range.

My first and still my primary AR is a Lewis Machine and Tool (LMT) Monolithic Rail Platform (MRP). It's a great rifle to start with as you can change barrels easily (I wanted the 5.56 and 6.8spc barrels) and it's just a solid rifle. the quad rails are heavy, and they have gone up in price over the years, and they have had some quality issues recently but overall 10/10 for my use and what I want. I bought mine 16 years ago and they only had the original lower receiver (now called the Defender), so last year I bought a stripped LMT MARS-l lower (fully ambidextrous) and built it up with my "ideal" parts.

Of course now that i have an extra LMT defender lower, I want another MRP SpecWar MRP upper and a 12.5" barrel to use on the MARS-L lower and put my quad 16" on the Defender. Waiting on a few cans and will SBR the MARS lower when I get them.

I have a few other AR's, but usually my better stuff all goes on the LMT. Just picked up a NX8 1-8 scope to try out on it to replace the MRO I had on there.
