I don't claim to hate all things liberal and then show my liberal leanings. Don't hate yourself crashman. Liberals have a valid point-of-view. The liberal response to this will be to make sweeping changes and spin off a host of unintended consequences. They want immediate action! A conservative response would be that there's probably a failing in our current system here and we should address that before making any changes. I mean, how broke can the sytem be if everyone was okay with it yesterday? That may cost us time in the long run but then again conservatives would rather get it right in the end than be hasty and need to revisit the changes later. Conservatives rarely win humanitarian awards.

Would you be happy if the State Department No Travel List was used for additional TSA screening?

It is not at all surprising that this guy sought medical help and was sent home, just as it isn't surprising that hospitals are dealing with "mystery illnesses".
Doctors and hospitals aren't looking for these diseases, because they don't (or didn't) exist here. There are plenty of doctors today who have never seen illnesses that were common when I was a kid.
What doctor in Texas is going to recognise Ebola? They'd be more likely to recognize Bubonic Plague.

I'll take a stab at this one. How about the government concentrate on doing the things they're supposed to do like securing borders, building infrastructure, national defense etc. and they can stop trying to crawl up everybodies everyday business. They can get rid of a whole lot of government agencies and regulation and concentrate on the basics...

Part of the role of government is the training and deployment of military forces. When politics are left out of that role, we have probably the most elite fighting force in the world. I'm not sure you'll find any sane person on either side of the political spectrum hat believes our country is best serviced by the reduction of our defenders.

Your "choice" is typically decided by that neat little box you put a check mark in come election time.

I don't disagree. When we get a concensus on what role we expect government to play then we'll have a position we can build a movement around. Right now we're not there. We want rules until we want to break them. We want order until we don't want it to apply to us. We want to keep sick people out of the country but we think TSA is an intrusive annoyance. We want immigration reform but we don't want to risk a political opportunity to take action. We're so tied up in contradictions we can't respond to an outbreak. Well, maybe we need to thin the herd.

I noticed that a couple of government doctors, in an apparent attempt to allay panic, have said that we shouldn't worry about Ebola too much because it doesn't cause much coughing and sneezing. That's nice. People cough and sneeze all the damn time, even when they're not "sick", and people with colds really cough and sneeze a lot. Wait until someone with Ebola also catches a cold. Pretty soon, we'll be smack dab in the middle of cold and flu season, too.

Well, there are over 2000 federal agencies. If we can't pick which ones need to go then cut them all back by 20% :D. We have too much federal government period. Something has to give.

ha ha ha. Ya, that is it! You got me! My self loathing is caused by hating free loaders and social handout programs but not giving a rats ass about abortions or recreational drug use. I am so conflicted...:D

I actually disagree with both approaches. The liberal knee jerk reaction almost always costs a shit ton and swings the pendulum too far in the other direction while the conservative approach is more about conserving wealth and takes nothing else in to consideration. This usually turns out as bad because it misses alot of the more subtle effects and ends up costing more in the long run. It is typical MBA thinking where they only worry about keeping the wheels on the wagon until it is someone elses problem.

TSA would have to fire a bunch of the drooling blue shirts that currently occupy the airports and hire trained people but I would feel alot better knowing that the money was being spent checking out people coming from disease ridden countries. It would be better than the granny groping that currently goes on to give the impression they are not profiling.

I'm a Libertarian so I'm with ya! But the rest of the country isn't. Maybe if everyone actually went through the exercise of justifying what parts of government they found necessary there would be more fruitful discussions. But what I see is that people complain about the parts they don't like and have unrealistic expectations from the parts they do like.

That's a sad indictment of our current political spectrum. I don't blame anyone for mixing liberal and conservative ideas ad hoc and branding them whatever they loath less.

My question is, ebola flare ups have happened for decades, and quickly subsides....Not this strain, this strain is spreading fast, and infecting disease specialists who follow strict protocol.
Why? Whey is this strain spreading so fast, and (apparently) more easily transmitted?
Is there something they are not telling us about this strain?

IMHO, the extreme virulence of the virus is one of the reasons it burns out so fast. In the past, outbreaks have been in more remote areas without a lot of human migration. The disease simply runs out of victims. When the outbreaks occur closer to population centers with more travel, the outbreaks last longer and spread further.

It is aerosol, same as cold/flu....no different. How easy is it to catch cold/flu?
You dont sneeze w/ this disease? Maybe not, but who cares? Rub your eyes, touch your sweat, cough in your hand, blow your nose. You sweat like you ran a marathon when symptomatic. You also drain mucuse like a wterpark.
Anything they touch while shedding it is 'Hot" and whoever touches it now has the virus on them externally. Not endangering themselves, but spreading it to everything they touch.

They are downplaying how easy this is transmitted. The exponential spread of this strain shows they are full-of-poop about how hard it is to contract.

Can't wait until the pre-exposure vaccinations come out....injecting you w/ live ebola virus.

    pfffftttt

When stuff like this or the SARS scare are going on it makes me glad that I work alone and don't see alot of the general public. Not being stuck in a office or a plane with people coughing and sneezing all over me is probably the main reason I'm hardly ever sick.

    Being a loner has it's advantages. :D

I don't believe the article because of this paragraph..

“The next steps are basically threefold,” said Frieden. “First, to care for the patient … to provide the most effective care possible as safely as possible to keep to an absolute minimum the likelihood or possibility that anyone would become affected, and second, to maximize the chances that the patient might recover,” said Frieden.

    I only count twofold steps.
