shit dude... you out your mind. americans still get into Cuba, and North Korea, and you think some dude (especially if he's an American citizen) isn't gonna find his way back with enough bribing and/or trickery? get serious.

they'll fly to Canada and take a bus across. they'll go to another african country and fly out of there. you should feel damn lucky that this guy called the CDC and tried to get help for himself and cause alarm. i'm sure there's plenty of people who out of fear of quarantine or questionable status might not say shit and just incubate in their apartment. or fear of dying in some shithole country and they wanna get back to the US any way they can cause they feel it would be their best chance for survival.

flu season is just around the corner... i can't wait to see the paranoia from everyone who gets a cold or the flu and thinks they have ebola, or won't go out in public because of other sick people. its gonna be a grand ol' time for television news.

I've been giving it some thought. You're right. I think the US government should give anybody in West Africa free airline tickets so they can fly to the US for treatment. They deserve access to the US medical system. I don't think it's even constitutional for the government to give anybody a little closer look just because they're coming from an area with an infectious disease epidemic. Shit, it's just ebola. There's also something inheritantly racist since most of the victims are black. Thanks for helping me get my head straight...

Well... I live in the DFW metro area, and my reaction was to go about my day just like normal. Funny thing... My wife had an appointment with her ladyparts doc, who's office is in the Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital complex. She went. If you didn't know that that was THE hospital, you couldn't have told any difference.

When this blows over like SARS, H1N1, West Nile, Swine Flu, etc, etc, ad infinitum, I wonder if yall nervous nellies are gonna feel silly.

    Probably not.

Please post your epideiology degree & associated report cards from whichever prominent university you earned if from that qualifies you to make that prediction.

So why even try to make it hard right

Sorry I do not feel 'lucky' that this guy is a decent person. Most people are like him and I wish the disease on none of them. However allowing it to spread helps no one. Oh and if you restrict the traffic of illegals it is harder for the really nasty ones to hide in the horde.

Oh and as far as quarantine if anyone has the disease do our best to help them survive it.

I would have gone for her also as the hospital is one of the safer places probably.

I do hope you are correct on it blowing over however unlike those you named this has a very high kill rate. It has periodically reoccurred over there with small impact however it has never made it to the high population areas like this time. That leads to a higher spread and probability of mutation than in the past by magnitudes.

Swine flu in comparison was largely based on what might happen as was bird flu. And even if correct the worst flu epidemics had a survival rate far above this disease.

My prediction is entirely based on my Nostrasheepus skills :D And yes I would love to be wrong. Sadly so far my concerns have panned out much better than the presidents no worries policy.

Hey man, I didn't mean it. I totally thought it would be OK to open my bat/gorilla meat stand in Africa. You can't blame a guy for trying to make a buck.

"Past outbreaks of the virus have been linked to people hunting gorillas and chimps for food, or eating dead apes they find in the jungle. There are no gorillas in West Africa, so specialists think this outbreak is linked to fruit bats. In 2007 in Uganda, an Ebola outbreak was traced to “a couple of kids playing with fruit bats in a cave. They came home with two dead fruit bats and the mothers cooked them,” said Dr. Estrella Lasry, a tropical medicine advisor to Doctors Without Borders."

Weird. I was there at exactly 9am and the area between the hospital and Margo Perot was full of media vans/trucks.

    Epidemiology

I am not losing sleep over the presence of the disease here. However we have already gone from it won't happen, to highly unlikely, to here it is with somewhere around 100 people exposed. Sorry, but that doesn't exactly inspire confidence. It is indeed possible that there are people that have been exposed but are not on the "list". Not enough of a concern to change my life, I'm pretty much anti-social.

IIRC, monkeys, fruit bats etc are the animal hosts for the disease in Africa. Is it possible that there is a host organism here that we simply haven't identified making periodic outbreaks more common?
