I ordered an Icotec call from Amazon. Well reviewed, economical, remote range is farther than I'll ever need. Can add a decoy if I decide to. Really looking forward to keeling some yotes. Mauling, killing, eating peoples pets and livestock. There needs to be less of them.
I have a savage 110 in 308, was from San Onofre nuclear generation station (SONGS) security that I got second hand at a LGS. That thing is accurate as fuck. I ring steel at 1000 yds regularly with it, with the load I was told it likes. Point being, it's fun, easy to shoot, and has some "historical" value. To me it's cool because it was a real service sniper rifle, but I get what your saying. 308 is not the best long range round, it can go places but there are much better rounds for it. Just a cool piece of local (to me ) history. And a tack driver. I don't hunt with it but I love taking it out with friends and showing them what first round impacts at 800+ yards feels like. I usually get them hooked on long range after that. Also, I paid 1200 bucks not 8,000 but still, I get the appeal.
I'm not sure I'd give much more than $2k for it, and that would only be to part it out and make a decent profit.
check out the Aero Solus action. They make a short action .540 for the PRC, should be easy to find a 6.5prc barrel. Heck for the price you could probably buy the whole Solus rifle with a 6.5cm barrel and then get the .540 bolt face and a new barrel and still not be into it for a ton of $$.
That sounds good but, I have no Gunsmithing tools, and would rather leave this to the professionals, or buy a prebuilt barreled action. That way I just need to drop it in a chassis. Ski
Has anyone tried one of the Savage Impulse straight pull bolt guns? I've considered a Blaser R8 for a while but haven't pulled the trigger because of the cost. The savage looks pretty slick and the video reviews I've watched show the typical Savage accuracy (good) and a great trigger.
No input from me, but mad respetto for anyone that's interested in a straight-pull rifle. If the Euros got anything right with firearms, it was the straight pull action.
You seem pretty butthurt over what other people spend their money on. And if you’re judging this guns value based on performance, then you completely missed the point. Guessing you’ve never heard of the term provenance?
But what history does it really have? Was it used by a well known sniper? If not, its just a pile of parts(some not particularly impression e, let alone exceptional), that some suckers pay way too much for.
we have a blaser at the farm. It’s cool but no one shoots it. The straight back thing is like o neat! the first time then you are over it. I shot my 270 merkel the other day and it kicks like a mule. Awesome gun but brutal unless you are shooting something and adrenaline makes you not feel the kick
One of the ladies that shoots with us bought one. Dude at the gun store told her all of the Savage rifles where switching to that design, and she believed him. I haven't messed with it, but it looks like you need to be fairly forceful with it to cycle it.
Reading through a post about it on another forum, apparently 52 of these were issued to the marine corps in early gwot and at the time, the combination of accuracy, suppression, and night vision capabilities made it one of the most advanced sniper platforms of its time. frankly I have no idea how true any of that is but the general consensus of that group is that it is indeed an obsolete basic 700 by todays standards but it was a grail gun for many of those guys at the time. I see it as not too dissimilar from old muscle cars (that I personally find rather meh) or even the 2nd gen dodge viper I lust after. Sure a 2024 Camry probably outruns all of them and does so with a more comfortable ride for a fraction of the cost. But that really isn’t the point. For someone somewhere it strikes the right nerve to make them happy. Who am I to judge?
Yeah, but these things were built in the mid-2000's. That's like spending $75k for a 2003 Z28 with some special factory paint job. I will admit, I don't get the appeal of old military weapons. Also, I assume you do not get the suppressors or night vision that were originally with these rifles. As far as accuracy, I guarantee that they aren't anything special.
Beretta brought a straight pull rifle to the US. And it's a switch barrel and ambidextrous. Just another option to consider.
Makes sense. I've got a PVA 6.5CM barrel for my Nucleus but haven't put it on/shot it yet. They make some very good barrels. They can build you a 6.5PRC barreled action with whatever specs you want on the barrel. Check on lead times, their only complaint over the years is the wait to get one. I had ordered one of the John Hancock rifles years ago and after delays (that they were very open about IMHO) they offered to move my deposit to anything else or refund me at any time. Bought an 308 LRI barreled action and got a 6.5CM barrel from PVA. https://patriotvalleyarms.com/solus-barreled-action/
