Haven’t shot it yet and should be picking up the 16” barrel Saturday.my suppressor is delivering today. Should have it completed this weekend! I’ve been home maybe 6 days in the last month with training, work, and travel. It’s been rough. Currently in Toronto
One more piece of the puzzle for hunting. Received my fr44 ball head arca swiss mount from Final Rest the other day, received the M-Lok, adapter from Magpul, and Rekon gen2 pic rail to arca adapter today. Put the m-lok adapter on one of the hunter chassis and mocked it up. This is going to be great for predator and deer hunting. When I have time, I will add the Rekon adapter to one of the Larue MSR's, and try them both out at the range. Tripods for hunting are just a game changer, for me. With the ball head option you can level the gun/scope, rotate/scan side to side, and tip for elevations. You can lock it in place enough to where you really need to work to move it. Ski
Preliminary results of my most recent sponge assault. I think I may fill in a few spots a little more, or maybe not. The comp didn't turn out with the sponge effect so definitely gonna redo it.
I'm really happy with how it turned out. Artificial light doesn't do it justice. I used the Rustoleum Chalked paint. Ultra flat. The comp turned out horrible, definitely gonna strip and do over. The one thing I don't get quite right is using too much pressure on the sponge. Less of the background shows through. But for a 30 minute job I'm pleased.
Hopefully the last step to getting comfortable. I have short fingers so the a2 grip angle isn't the best for me. Put on a fab defense gradus. Much closer reach to the trigger.
Is there a method to approximate where a bullet will strike when switching ammo? For example, at 100 yards 300 BLK 110 grain bullet strikes center mass. If switching to 150 grain without re-zeroing, is there a method to approximate where the bullet will strike on that 100 yard target? I used a ballistic computer and made the zero range = 0 and the sight height = 0. Entered all of the data and at 100 yards the 110 grain hit -3.36"and the 150 grain calculated -5.14". To me that means that the 150 grain will shoot about 2" lower and this was not my experience, not even close.
Conventional thinking is that the heavier bullet is travelling slower with more recoil, so the muzzle is higher in elevation than where it is with a lighter, faster bullet. Therefore, it is usual that the heavier bullet will hit higher at closer ranges, but the trajectory is a much higher arc and so when it drops below the line of sight, it will be dropping faster and impacting lower than the lighter bullet. Bottom line is to test it at the various ranges at which you shoot and figure out what the bullet path is. It will also vary depending on rifle weight and barrel length.
My 16” 6mm creedmoor is just waiting on a new grip and I’ll be complete. I didn’t like the mdt grip much… too small. It’s gonna be a sweet little shooter I think. The otter creek hydrogen s seems to balance really well. We’ll see how it sounds. I’ll post up a pic once it’s complete
New grip made a world of difference. Had very limited time today before rain set in. Did 4x 5 shot groups with Frontier 75 gr HPBT from a clean, cold bore. All were just under 1". I'd like to see how it would group with match ammo and more magnification.
Really liking this set up. I may get to shoot on Saturday. We’ll see Ruger 6mm cm cut to 16” w/ tbac 7 or hydrogen s. Gonna try them both but they are essentially the same. Cheap gun turned expensive
Very nice, Travis! My next project is an offset dot on my AR. I have a cv life one from Amazon, but I found an old gen viper 6 moa being closed out that I ordered. If I don't like that setup I'll use it for something else. I just want it for close shots where rapid target acquisition is a must.
Well, tomorrow is modern firearms opener in Kentucky. I won't be participating, maybe Sunday. Probably won't go until middle of next week though. Fewer lunatics and weather will be cooler. Actually been close to 20 years since I've hunted. Looking forward to getting back to my roots. Took the rifles out this evening, because changing multiple factors right before season is obviously a great idea. Slight adjustment on my Ruger after changing the rail, 2 MOA up and a click left. Then was shooting half inch groups with the 143 ELD-X with ease. My AR has gone from shooting slightly under minute of angle to slightly under minute of pumpkin. Slop between upper and lower has increased drastically with use. Could that cause it? I'm gonna check to see if the barrel nut has loosened as well.
more likely that it’s something to do with the mount and optic. Unless you hand tightened the barrel nut then that should be fine too. A little play between the lower and upper if it was shooting well before also would make me think it’s something else. What optic and mount are on the ar and is the ammo different?
Optic is a 2.5-10 Viper with a vortex pro cantilever as it's always been. I am trying barnes vor-tx 70 gr in case I do decide to pop a deer with it. Was having the same worse results with the 75 gr frontier bthp that was shooting great earlier. I did clean the barrel down to bare metal before trying the copper monos as I'd heard it was best to not have leftover copper from cup and core bullets. Barrel is 1/8 which is what Barnes recommends. A possible duh situation is I'm shooting prone in a hay field, so I'm possibly getting a few stems deflecting rounds. But my 6.5 is still shooting like .
Assuming your optic and mount are torqued down to spec, I’d say it is far more likely something in your upper. That optic and mount are not likely to be having problems like this on their own. But that upper… no offense but there’s a reason BCA are some of the cheapest shit on the market. I’d check your barrel nut and headspace to start with.
No offense taken. It started off shooting pretty damn well, but even before I fired the first shots I saw a couple of things I didn't like first time I stripped everything down to clean all the oil off. Mainly that the barrel was so dirty. But they somehow assembled the bcg with the retainer pin shoved in the wrong way. What headspace gauges are typically used? For precision bolt guns people will do go plus a piece of scotch tape. For an AR I presume less precision is expected, so no go or field gauge? I don't have an armorers wrench, and bca uses a weird barrel nut. Looks like a big ass crow's foot will be needed to check torque. Being a complete AR newb, is it normal to have a small amount of carbon leaking out of the gas block/tube union? Speaking of carbon, there's been a lot more of it in the barrel when I clean lately. That could be a difference between the frontier and barnes powders though.
We had our rifle opener for deer Friday the 15th. This guy was the 6th buck I saw during the morning portion of the sit. The neighbors moving in and out of the woods retrieving their harvest, pushed him by me 2 different times. Took him with my original creedmoor, no suppressor, at 214 yards... Just like last year. DRT, fell within feet of last years buck. Headed back to the blind to complete the full day sit, saw 4 more bucks, all within range, only one close to this size. Time to look for Mr. Big, and or fill antlerless tags. Ski
