Rattle can hall of fame/shame

Yep and Yep! The issue people end up having with rattle cans is the lack of a hardner, this helps that. I'm trying a high temp engine enamel that's suppose to be 'resistant' but not going to bank on it being resistant to fuel.

I googled that stuff & seems to get good reviews. Here's a link to a motorcycle forum with pics and it looks pretty good.

My question though is do you need to spray a lacquer then the spraymax, or will the spraymax work on its own? And.... I guess this guy didn't wet sand or buff.

My buddy did the same thing last year. I bought him a small aquarium for his "$55 million" rocks

My local DuPont paint shop will make up spray cans of 1X Urethane paint. This is the same stuff used in body shops, and offer the benefits of fuel protection.

Note that they are expensive ($20+??), and there's not a lot of paint in a can. After 3-4 cans, you might as well buy a pint of real paint and do it traditionally.

Regarding stripes, go to a body shop and get the blue 3M flexible tape for masking (it has a proper name, just don't know what it is). This is not like the stuff at Home Depot, but rather a 1/4" shiny thick vinyl tape that flexes very well and sticks good without lifting paint.

WAY better than traditional blue tape. Used it several times on bodywork, and never has paint go under it.

    One for the shame thing...

Wanted to paint the top part of My tail section red to match the other red parts of My FZR. I went and got 'whatever the eff spray paint' that kinda matched from Lowes, got some pin striping from Autozone, and some beer. as You can see in the pic, the color doesn't match, the pin striping doesn't meet up, there's little specs of crap stuck in it, it hasn't been sanded, or clear coated. There is also a big thumbprint in it from where I wanted to check to see if it was dry. Pff.

    chuckbear Totally radical, bro.

Weird, with a clear coat mine's held up well to fuel. Rustoleum enamel from Home Depot.

  8. That wasn't me, I crashed in practice.

I decided to repaint my gsxr this weekend. I lowsided a year ago and just patched it up with duct tape so it was due. Previously I just sprayed it with flat black and put whatever stickers I could find on it. In addition to the crash damage, the single layer of paint was all chipped up and several of the sticker wear peeling off. This time I actually made an effort (sort of). It's still rattle canned but I used better paint, wet sanded, and clearcoated. It's far from perfect, but at least it doesn't look like total ass.

Where did you get that copper color in rattle can? I looked all over for that and couldn't find it.

I made it. It's a base coat of krylon pumpkin orange, then alternating layers of burnt copper metallic engine paint (tsw I think) and krylon cherry red (although burgandy would have been better). Last coat is a dusting of the engine paint again. It took all day and still doesn't look right up close but it'll do. I'll probably crash it first chance I get anyway!

I've tried but I think i wasted enough money in supplies and time to just get the bike painted professionally with great paints and clearcoats. Get buddy buddy with a bodyshop guy.

4 cans of black, one can of orange, one can of red, two cans of clearcoat @ 3.77 each = $30.16. One can of metallic @ 6.99 for a total of $37.17 before tax. I guess you could figure in time but I just did it in between other projects over the course of four days when I needed a change of pace. The best price I've received from any of by body shop "buddies" was about $300.

I'll have to give that a shot this winter... I already decided on a scheme for this year, but I was wanting a burnt copper scheme this year but wasn't successful in finding the shade I wanted. That looks great and I can handle dusting layers and what not. Great idea... wish I had thought of it.

I rattle canned most of our Moto 2 bike at Indy in 2011. Lower and upper done by Scotty van hawk. We had so many graphics it never mattered. Poured gas in during one of the test days, overfilled and watched the blue start to run and bubble. Took all I had not to wipe off immediately- waited till the gas dryer and all was ok. I knew going in we were doing a temporary paint job.
You can also paint in very cold weather as long as you heat the paint and the part (usually finishing bikes for shows during the winter is how I know this)
I have no idea why any racer on a budget would spring for a high dollar paint job. (normally I end up saving $500+, because of all the spare panels)
I have had nice paint jobs too.
