I know it happened, but I was hoping that they would not be graphic with it. Is it something that you can just fast-forward through? Is there a lead-up that you can use to know it's coming? I really don't want to see anything bad happen to the animals. People I only give a half a shit about.
Yeah, there's only 3 characters involved in those scenes, so when you see them come up on screen you'll know to skip that part.
I have the feeling that's what drove the suicide that opened the series. I'm also feeling a bit of sympathy for the "There was no explosion" guy. He understood the redacted part of the information and why it was redacted. He knows he's screwed and that the KGB will guard their eff up no matter what.
So, I've been watching this thread, wishing I had HBO to watch the series... The other night, after reading some of the posts, I went to bed. Had a dream about being at the reactor during the "accident." Just then, a thunderstorm lets loose with a huge boom. I damn near hit the ceiling, then it occurred to me I was having a dream. Just as quickly, I thought: WTF?! Carry on...
Do they cover this? http://www.pravdareport.com/news/russia/18024-n/ If you search on Youtube there is video of a large UFO over the Fukushima reactor during that event.
Final episode was tonight....it highlights the trial of those responsible for the meltdown. It lays out fairly clearly how it all went wrong and why it went kaboom.
Not sure if serious but what was covered is that the high radiation can cause the air to become iridescent.
I liked the ending....i liked how it went full circle and ended up where episode one pretty much began. Excellent show. I think it really captured what i remember of the Socialist/Communist country mentality.
That show should win awards for the writing and acting. It has to be one of the best written shows I’ve seen in a long while.
The level of arrogance displayed by the officials in charge and the state is mind blowing. “To this day the Soviet Union the official death toll remains at 31” You want to know why the iron curtain fell? Because they still can’t admit they made a mistake.
OK, I'm caught up on the thread, and I didn't see it mentioned here, so I'll ask, especially since we have some people who might know... Also, I haven't seen the last episode yet, so if it is covered there, I'm asking too early... It is my understanding that though Reactor 4 exploded and burned, they kept other reactors in the same facility running for a significant period of time (1 & 2, maybe?). They have the same design flaw as the one that exploded. Did they get retrofitted or anything to mitigate another catastrophe? It sounds like they didn't. I somewhat understood the explanation in the show about the ends of the fuel rods and graphite, but this seems like a huge safety issue. I also get that they could amend procedures to avoid (as best as possible) the conditions that cause the other RBMK reactors to have problems (Was it Switzerland? there was another before Chernobyl that they caught in time), but that still seems like an awfully risky thing to keep them running. Doing some other reading, it appears there are a number of other facilities (like 10 or so) in Russia that use the RMBK-1000 style reactor with the same design - and we have no idea whether they're any safer (or at least, that's what I was led to believe by the article).
As mentioned it does indeed cover it and alot more. Ep5 is an excellent way for those who aren't in the know to fully grasp how it all went down. Legasov [sp?] is witness at the trial and he explains it all.
