    y question...

I'm gonna have contractors here for bids, but I want to be prepared for their nonsense.

I'm putting a wood burning fireplace right here in the middle, near the windows. The piping will run straight up the middle. Can the piping penetrate the roof in the peak, or will they need to jog over to one side or the other? Assuming a box will need to be installed. My roof is asphalt shingle if that makes a difference.

    Thanks!

I'd chatter my teeth before I screwed that window view up.

Is there an attic space or is that a vaulted ceiling? The penetration can go anywhere you want but slightly offset would be simpler.

    No attic space.

Agree and I have resisted for over 17 years. This one is on the way. Its a small 18" box and I think it will look pretty all right.

There's gonna be a ridge beam of some sort up there. You'll need a jog or some extensive framing.

I don't think so? See the 2 huge beams on either side? If there is, probably (2) 2"x8"?

It will have to be A rated pipe to run that close to the column without an ugly heat shield.

I'm with the previous poster: put it ANYWHERE but in the middle of that view.

Edit : I can't figure how it will be able to go straight up through the ridge beam. But, that said, running it offset, or even jogging it over to the side just before it gets to the ceiling would offend the symmetry.

No idea on the roofing matter, but I am very pleased with our wood stove. Recommend soapstone if it’s within budget. Either way, walking into a house that has its windows open to regulate inside temps when it’s minus-Siberia outside, is awesome.

Uh, no, there is and they're important. Not saying it isn't doable, but you won't simply be poking through right in the ridge unless it isn't framed properly.

Likely to be a trussed roof if I had to guess.

What about going out through the beam behind the stove and use the heat shield that you're going to have to put back there to hide any re-framing necessary to carry the load.

A jog will ruin everything for me. It has to go straight up or will have to go in another location.

Id buy some heated blankets & ceramaic heater before a wood burner in the middle there. Keep in mind the fire will suck all the conditioned air...

It’s fucked. Just sell me the place for a smokin deal and start over. You’ll be happier.

On a traditional open draft that's correct. On a modern catalyst unit that's not the case. It has a dedicated fresh air intake from the outside to the firebox. The blower pulls air from inside the house, flows it over the outside of the firebox and blows it out into the room. I fancy forced air wood stove if you will. If you pull fresh air from outside to flow over the firebox you are actually pressurizing the interior of the house.
