Ask the builders about a direct vent.

Just blocking. The framing for the penetration box will serve the same purpose, so not a problem. The box can be trimmed to suit the roof contour and also to set the interior depth. You can go right up the middle. I will come do the job for you if you give me a Ducati.

Yep. They'll need to move some blocking and frame a little stack on the roof side to not have to be creative with the sealing of roof penetration.

Keep in mind that the end of the stovepipe/chimney has to be 10' clear of the roof horizontally.

Cool!!! I realize that having that thing there is going to distract from the view, but it also anchors/centers the space according to how I'll have 2 large sofas and a center coffee table aligned to the center point of the living room and the view. We never use the living room and its the largest room in the house. So I want to change that and create a more inviting hangout space that encourages use.

When the contractors are there, ask them about the NFPA codes you would fall under. If they don't know, move on. Its not hard. Residential fireplace section is only a couple pages long with pictures last I read through it.

But also think about where you are going to have the fresh air intake come in below those windows.

Also check with county about stoves. Here where I am it needs to be certified.

I'm glad that my cabin is located in an area where you can still do what you want on your own property, within reason.

There has to be another hole to draw fresh air?

I want the thing to operate, but heating and efficiency are not really the objectives. This is more about ambience and inviting use of the space.

Is your house on a slab? Unless they have changed the code, your fresh air intake can come through the floor.

Oh cool. Its on a crawlspace so that would work.

Not sure if fresh air is a requirement, but you could let the fire use your interior air for burning. But that will create some negative pressure in the room, and draw air from the place of least resistance. That might be another exhaust vent, which could draw more CO into the living spaces. Or through a leaky window. Either way, it will find a way. That's why having a fresh air in is a good idea. Leaves the rest of the house air alone.

Thanks, makes sense. My house is kinda leaky and drafty, so I think I'll try without cutting a hole in the floor. Can always do that later if I need to.

So any guesses on labor and materials for this job? I have the fireplace and 10' of pipe, so the job will need the junction box at the roof and the exterior chimney and flashing.

Close... The spec is 2' above everything within 10' radius of the flue.

At least that's what it was in CO, CT, and here in TX.

I haven't really kept up on actual wood fireplaces since all the new stuff I look at is bedazzled pretend type propane fueled and ventless.
I was at my buddy's place in NJ where he has a 2 story wood burning fire place... when it got roaring it pulled the temp in the rest of the house into the 50s on a 30 degree evening.

Have you taken the time to determine the
Feng Shui of locating the fireplace there?

My cabin is pretty tight. I find that a modest fire results in just enough oxygen depletion to ensure a good night's sleep.
