Yes, it seems that maybe the founding fathers knew how the progression of society would go when Franklin made that statement about keeping a republic if we could. I suspect that he was smiling knowingly when he made that statement. The dissolution of our Republic keeps going away slowly and surely. Early in our history only rich landowners could, or would, vote so we were, for the most part, kept on a path declaring that you would work for what you received. Then, God forbid, we urged the poor to vote since it was their country also. Quickly the Democratic party learned that if they promised free stuff to those poor voters it would be easier to stay in power. Only the non-caring attitude toward voting of most of the poor saved us from a total domination of the more Socialist leaning individuals. Look at us today. We've got a large portion of the voting public that supports a self declared Socialist. We've been on that slippery slope of Socialism for a long time and our feet are into the pit of Socialist alligators. Yeah, we be doomed.
Yeah, that all makes sense and shit, but........why are there non-wealthy people who don't tow the line for the democrats? Why do they not vote for free shit promises?
Kinda funny that the people that seem to be cheering Scalias death are the ones that would likely be terribly offended if something happened to an honoured liberal and anyone said anything negative...
It's a tremendous shame when only half of the court can be so characterized. The world is truly coming to an end. RIP, Justice Scalia. A brilliant and important jurist.
Watching the news this morning.... Sheriff found him with a pillow over his head. No autopsy will be done. Died of natural causes. No heart attack as earlier reported. Isn't a heart attack a bit of a natural cause? And how do they know that without autopsy? Calling Dr. Stantheman. Conspiracy anyone?
appropriate for the dungeon. “I attack ideas. I don’t attack people. And some very good people have some very bad ideas. And if you can’t separate the two, you gotta get another day job.”- Justice Scalia
Yep. And for a very staid court, he brought some good humor, too. This now raises the question: Will Clarence be forced to think for himself? Will he speak?
Among the racist left Some might argue listening is just as important or more than speaking when it is a Justice.
I think it's a mistake to characterize Justice Thomas' silence during public arguments as disengagement. A quiet idealogue.
During a Sunday morning appearance on ABC’s “This Week,” Democratic Sen. Charles Schumer decried the intent of many Senate Republicans to prevent President Barack Obama from appointing the successor to deceased Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia. But less than a decade ago, Schumer advocated doing the same exact thing if any additional Supreme Court vacancies opened under former President George W. Bush. “When you go right off the bat and say, ‘I don’t care who he nominates, I am going to oppose him,’ that’s not going to fly,” Schumer added. When George W. Bush was still president, Schumer advocated almost the exact same approach McConnell is planning to pursue. During a speech at a convention of the American Constitution Society in July 2007, Schumer said if any new Supreme Court vacancies opened up, Democrats should not allow Bush the chance to fill it. “We should reverse the presumption of confirmation,” Schumer said, according to Politico. “The Supreme Court is dangerously out of balance. We cannot afford to see Justice Stevens replaced by another Roberts, or Justice Ginsburg by another Alito.” Notably, when he made his remarks in 2007, Bush had about seven more months remaining in his presidential term than Obama has remaining in his.
I don't see it as disengagement; I did see it as "he has me covered". We will see. I would like to hear what's going on back there. Scalia was the true intellectual leader of the right side of the court, and I admired him for his thinking and principles. It would be interesting (and surprising) to see Thomas take on that role. No matter, the election season just got a shot in the arm.
Indeed, while i struggled with his (more recent) vitriolic dissents, i always tried to understand his point of view. In his majority opinions, he was methodical, principled, generally consistent, and passionate. There's no questioning his influence on the court or his dedication to the law. For those who like to sit back and watch (myself included), an already fascinating election cycle is now even more so.
McConnell was an idiot. He just handed the Demacrats a baseball bat and said "Please hit us over the head with this in the media." You can stonewall, say the Senate has more pressing business, ask the nominee questions you know they can't answer and then claim they are not answering questions, etc. None of that will get the nominee a chance of getting confirmed unless they are actually conservative, which they won't be. Coming right out and saying we won't even give the time of day to anyone Obama nominates is just handing ammunition over to the enemy for the elections. Dumb.
