I like the idea of a fat bike but it would be pretty specialised, not sure how much it would end up getting ridden. I'm thinking of something road based to haul the kids around on, surly big dummy would take 2 on the back. Maybe with some old downhill forks up front for style points.

I'm too lazy to find the article, but Singletracks.com had a good article about how/why a fat tire mtb could be your first, if not only, bike.

I liked the article, because it endorsed the decision i made, but it's nice to hear a veteran cyclist agree with me.

Basically the fat tire bike only excels in snow or super loose conditions, but it's shockingly competent (if heavy and slower) at everything else too. Right now my fat tire bike is my ONLY bike, and while I'm thinking of taking the plunge on a CX bike (we have a good local race series, and I would use it as a road bike when the trails are closed), the fat bike has definitely been solid, and improved my fitness.

From my buddy Matt, who has 12+ different bikes, and is a very competitive category 1 racer, his fat bike is more fun than his trail bike and more comfortable than his XC race bike. He puts more miles on the fat bike than anything else in his garage (...except his road bike, but that's not really a fair comparison when he's doing 70 mile rides on the road, and no more than 25 offroad).

The Framed Minnesota fat bikes are really inexpensive for what you get. I went w/ the 3.0 because it has better components and can accept a suspension fork if I want it to. I know people who use their fat bike exclusively for snow, and bought the 1.0 for $600. At that price point, they don't have to ride it often to rationalize it.

I'm not confusing them - but I also remember how cool it was to get an old POS 3 speed over my single speed :D
