If you remember, Yamaha Race Team didn't want Rossi back, they were strong armed by the marketing department to take him back. Yamaha (and I think Honda too?) sell far more scooters than motorcycles, and the market in Asia for scooters is massive.

Think of it like this, how many retired sports stars do you see making commercials? Same concept. If Yamaha cared more about on track results than marketing money, he would have been let go 3 years ago. Marketing wanted him back and to retire at Yamaha so they can use it for the coming decades.

If they cared about on track results, they would've let go of him when he was second in the championship and top Yamaha? Interesting concept...

MotoGP hero Valentino Rossi complains that rivals don’t booze or stay up late

    :timeforabeer:

“You know the next generation is always stronger and they are more professional.
They put more effort and make a perfect life. They eat in a good way, don’t drink and go to sleep early.
To modify your life for MotoGP, you have to become more of an athlete.”

:crackup:Hell, even the track day guys now are more serious now than hard core racers used to be.

For what it is worth, I definitely think Rossi would be more fun to party with than most of the other guys. There are a few others that might know how to have fun but for the most part they all seem like very serious young men.

Motocross was the same way in the McGrath era. He rode on pure talent and partied like a madman right after the race all the way till the next race weekend. Then Carmichael came in and changed the entire game forcing everyone to train all the time.
