How Not to Display the American Flag
The flag and its likeness should be treated with respect. Its image should not be cheapened or tarnished by improper use.

    • The flag should not be dipped to any person or thing, including government officials—even the President.

    • The flag should never be displayed with the union (stars) down, unless as a signal of dire distress.

    • The flag should never touch anything beneath it, such as the ground, the floor, water, or merchandise.

    • The flag should never be carried flat or horizontally, but always aloft and free.

    • The flag should never be fastened, displayed, used, or stored so that it might be easily torn, soiled, or damaged in any way.

    • The flag should never be used as covering for a ceiling.

    • The flag should never have anything placed on it.

    • The flag should never be used for any advertising purpose, nor embroidered on cushions or handkerchiefs, printed on paper napkins or boxes, nor used as any portion of a costume.

I am inclined to forgive well intentioned displays of patriotism, so the end user generally gets a pass from this veteran. Merchandising the flag for profits, not so much.

Personally, I think any clothing that looks like an American flag is tacky and in poor taste but I guess I'm old school. Want to be patriotic? Just wear red, white and blue. Simple. Adding an American flag pin on your chest is tasteful and has more class.

That is flag etiquette. Having an america flag incorporated into clothing is a long tradition in the USA. Further there is a lot of other symbols such as lapel pins or putting the flag on your helmet. Don't confuse the flag with a symbol of it. Oh an kapernick is an idiot that should hook up with AOC and move to one of the paradises they seem to worship (and renounce citizenship on the way out)

EDIT: an extreme illustration is the US Flag patch on uniforms. Do they enforce flag etiquette on the patch? Of course not as it is not a flag.

Then there is this from a .gov page:
    https://www.va.gov/opa/publications/celebrate/flagdisplay.pdf

Other Things Not to Do with the Flag Out of respect for the U.S. flag, never: dip it for any person or thing, even though state flags, regimental colors and other flags may be dipped as a mark of honor. display it with the union down, except as a signal of distress. let the flag touch anything beneath it: ground, floor, water, merchandise. carry it horizontally, but always aloft. fasten or display it in a way that will permit it to be damaged or soiled. place anything on the flag, including letters, insignia, or designs of any kind. use it for holding anything. use it as wearing apparel, bedding or drapery. It should not be used on a costume or athletic uniform. However, a flag patch may be attached to the uniform of patriotic organizations, military personnel, police officers and firefighters. use the flag for advertising or promotion purposes or print it on paper napkins, boxes or anything else intended for temporary use and discard.

Again...the difference between an actual FLAG and a depiction of the flag.

E.G. don’t take the flag off your flagpole and make a banana hammock out of it.

There are definite no-nos when it comes to the flag. Likenesses of said flag are NOT the flag and, therefore, do not fall under the regulations (yes, there are regulations) governing its use.

Making clothes out of the flag? No.
Making clothes out of red, white and blue materials with white stars? Okay.

Stitching a flag to items of clothing? No.
    Embossed, printed likenesses. Okay.

Kaepernick is a misguided POS and Nike, cowing to his feelz, are the biggest bag of douchenozzles to ever grace commercialism.

I realize that, but I'm old school in that I see any depiction of the American Flag on clothing as disrespectful, even if its the original version, or any version between then and the current one.

I understand and respect your point. Your point and Kapernick's are far from the same.

    This is such ridiculousness.
They won the war but cant, or wont realize, its over and keep looking for new (and usually) very petty battles to fight. Almost as if they need these "race" issues to keep happening, even though real versions of racism are few and far between.
