An MGB would be pretty dependable once you gave it a good going over. My dad used one as a daily driver for years. My MGTD is actually reliable, although the brakes are inadequate for modern traffic.

Porsche 914s are still relatively affordable and simple to wrench on

Def also in the mix, but a decent starting point seems to be hard to come by at a sub-$10k price. There's a lot of junk out there in that price range obviously too.

Ok. This may sound like a joke at first, but hear me out.

Fuel injected Fiat 124 Spider 2000. (Or the 83-85 Pininfarina re-label)

    :D

MGs were once you figured out how to keep them running.
If you kept up on the rust on the frame and hidden inside the panels. :D

Engine and transmission is/ was idiot proof and would run up until you tried “improving” on it.
The Germans protected rust on the 914 and you need to be at least four steps ahead or the car will literally disintegrate under you as you drive it.

He's in southern CA. Rust probably isn't an issue if he can find a local car that's been there all it's life.
If you go 914, get a 2.0 with a sideshift trans. Other than the 914/6s, those were the best of the bunch.

I feel like I saw so many growing up they’re just not unique to me. Also, a little plain / too new for the Pininfarina years.
I saw the more rare 124 Sport Coupe was sold in the US a bit, but I never see them for sale, so probably $$$.
Ideally I end up with something 1960s ish or late 50s.

I’m also open to the idea of a drivetrain-less solid example that I could shove a motorcycle engine into. I certainly don’t have the knowledge or skill to do it, but why let that stop me!

Naturally mid-engine, rear wheel drive, small/light, and pre-smog is a good start.

A Karman Ghia with a Subaru WRX/STI engine in the back would be lots of fun. It's been done.

It is small and good to put motorcycle engine in it like he wants :)
I have seen Yugo with Harley engine. Raced in Lemons race.

Too modern to give me the classic sports car vibes I'm looking for. Also getting it to pass smog easily could be a pain. If I had a smog guy that'd pass it, I could stuff a motorcycle engine in that too.

    Phl218 .

buddy asked if we should do Lemons at Road atlanta. I have a ‘75 benz (230/4, auto)i’d put up for it. The he said sequential gearbox. So the idea is beetle with gixxer or busa engine. Roll cages are readily available which makes the investment more reasonable (?). But not this year. Maybe next. Rather 2026
