Charleston was truly cool in the early 90's, as soon as they started turning the area around the market into an outdoor mall it lost all the old school charm it had for sure.
The worst bottleneck is heading north on 65 just as you exit town. I don't think it's possible they can widen it. E=As you come out of the loop it goes from 4 lanes down to 2 pretty quick. I've resorted to leaving early AM or at night just to avoid the mess.
Haven't read what others have written. I moved to SC in 1996. Bullet points: 1. SC taxes are way lower than GA or NC and always will be. 2. You can get more for your money in SC compared to GA and NC. 3. SC is still pretty redneck in a lot of the state except for Upstate (Greenville), Charleston, Beaufort, and Hilton Head Island. Columbia area just sucks because it is bloody hot and humid there compared to anywhere else in the state. 4. SC has many lake options. IMO the Upstate is best. 5. I would never live near the coast on any state. High cost, high insurance, higher maintenance cost and anywhere remotely decent the traffic will suck and only get worse. Not to mention the potential hurricane coming along. Too much of a hassle. F that. 6. I'm sure there are small towns near lakes in all three states but do you want that small town atmosphere? How small is too small? Good luck with your search. This info is worth exactly what you paid for it, Nada.
I lived there from 91 to 97. It was the best. Still plenty of seedy areas and a hint of damage from Hugo. Then effing Conde Nast and Southern Living declared it the best place in the universe and retirees started flocking.
What's wrong with the Lake Marion/Lake Moultrie area? Close enough to the coast to make a daytrip to the beach, but inland enough that hurricanes aren't really as issue.
Anywhere south of I-64 and east of I-57 is too close to the all consuming hole of shit traveling through Atlanta is.
Fuck Columbia. I live here and fucking hate it. If I could move, I'd put the for sale sign in the ground tomorrow. That being said....if you choose Cola, I'm a real estate agent and would love to help you. LOL
I live in NeGa (not sure how “east” ga you went to be) and love it. Been down here from Mi for about 14 years and could not see myself moving out of this type of geography. I’m right by SC border, office is in SC actually. I’m just about to leave Greenville which we just came for the might to watch the Drive game. It’s 1:15 from home, I’m Atl between 1.5 and 29 hours depending on traffic. On the lake all the time, can be on a few great dirt bike trails 20 minutes from the house or on some make shift trails right from the house. I’m at the edge of a small city so can shoot stuff from my backyard, if you are into hiking ornaments any crap like that I hear it’s great but wouldn’t know. Hauling my ass to the trout stream on my Talaria is enough work. Good buddy of mine has his hands in give or take 35% of all real estate transactions in my county and last 5 years or so most of the out of town people moving in are retiring or close to it and can work remote. He tries to stay above $500k properties and a lot of those (besides your typical lake house people) who he sells to with good Mountain View’s are people moving into the area. It’s driven pricing up substantially in that bracket as supply just isn’t there. I do struggle a bit feeling as I’ve stepped back in time having spent a good 15-18 years spending substantial time in Asia, Europe, Mexico and a bit in SA. It’s not uncommon to meet people who’ve have ventured as far as Panama City and don’t plan on going any further away from home. It’s one of the few things I struggle with with my 12 year old and making sure he’s exposed to as much of real world culture as he will face in the real world. One of the reason my daughter is going to U of Arkansas to r force herself away from her friends because it seems even the ones that went to college went in packs and returned in packs. Still literally talk about same shit they did 30 Years ago in high school. There is only one and I mean only one Al Bundy.
You can't really beat Wade Hampton Blvd in upstate SC, we have a McDonald's only 2.5 miles away from another McDonald's. If coming from Greenville, both are on the left side of the road so plan accordingly.
Our cheese curds are a dairyland delicacy. Made using the freshest, un-aged yellow and white Wisconsin cheddar cheese, deep-fried golden brown for a warm buttery crunch. Provided exclusively to Culver’s by La Grander Hillside Dairy in Stanley, Wisconsin.
