About to buy a Macbook Pro... tell me why I shouldn't! Quick! Never owned a Apple product in all my life... I'm starting to scare myself. Frank!!! Help a fellow UNIX nerd!!!
Apple is a great product. You will never go back to windows. I pulled the trigger a few years ago and have been happy about.
Man up Cornholio. You will like the Mac better than the pc in the long run. Unix weenies of the world unite!!
no matter what the Apple people say, all computers needs anti-virus software, even those red deciduous fruit type
I can not for the life of me get used to my MAC, I am on a Windows laptop all day long and can not seem to learn the shortcut keys on the MAC. To the point I almost hate the thing.. as I type this on it..
can I access the BSD UNIX core on the Macbook Pro? Can I run the x86 version of Solaris or Linux on Parallels or VMware?
what do you want to do, drop to a terminal/cli? yup, no problem. http://vmware.com/products/fusion/resources/system_requirements.html Supported 32-Bit Guest Operating Systems Client Systems Windows Vista (Business, Enterprise & Ultimate Editions) Windows XP (Professional SP2, Home Edition SP2) Windows 2000 Professional SP4 Windows NT 4.0 Workstation SP6a Windows Me Windows 98 SE Windows 95 SP1 Windows 3.1 MS-DOS 6.x SUSE Linux (10.1, 9.3) Novell Linux Desktop 9 SP2 Red Hat Enterprise Linux (5.0, 4.0 Update 4, 3.0 Update 8) Red Hat Enterprise Linux 2.1—stock 2.4.9‐e3 (Workstation) Red Hat Linux 9.0—stock 2.4.20‐8, upgrade 2.4.20‐20.9 Red Hat Linux 7.0—stock 2.2.16‐22, upgrade 2.2.17‐14 Solaris x86 10 11/06 (Update 3) Ubuntu Linux (6.10, 5.10) Mandriva Linux (2007, 2006) FreeBSD (6.1, 5.5) Turbolinux Desktop 10 Server Systems Windows Server 2003 Enterprise Edition, R2 Enterprise Edition Windows 2000 Server SP4, Advanced Server SP4 Windows NT 4.0 Server SP6a, SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 10, 9 SP3 Novell Netware 6.5 SP5 Novell Open Enterprise Server SP2 Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5.0, 4.0 Update 4, 3.0 Update 8 Red Hat Enterprise Linux 2.1—stock 2.4.9-e3 (Advanced Server, Enterprise Server) Red Hat Linux 9.0—stock 2.4.20-8, upgrade 2.4.20-20.9 Red Hat Linux 7.0—stock 2.2.16-22, upgrade 2.2.17-14 Solaris x86 10 11/06 (Update 3) Ubuntu Linux 6.10, 5.10 Mandriva Linux 2007, 2006 FreeBSD 6.1, 5.5 Turbolinux Enterprise Server 8 To top Supported 64-Bit Guest Operating Systems Client Systems Windows Vista (Business, Enterprise and Ultimate Editions) Microsoft Windows XP Professional SUSE Linux (10.1, 9.3) Red Hat Enterprise Linux (5.0, 4.0 Update 4, 3.0 Update 8) Solaris x86 10 11/06 (Update 3) Ubuntu Linux (6.10, 5.10) Mandriva Linux (2007, 2006) FreeBSD (6.1, 5.5) Server Systems Windows Server 2003 (SP1 Enterprise Edition, R2 Enterprise Edition) SUSE Linux Enterprise Server (10, 9 SP3) Red Hat Enterprise Linux (5.0, 4.0 Update 4, 3.0 Update 8) Solaris x86 10 11/06 (Update 3) Ubuntu Linux (6.10, 5.10) Mandriva Linux (2007, 2006) FreeBSD (6.1, 5.5)
If you want to run Fusion/ Parallels, (Do Fusion if you have a choice) make sure you get a decent amount of RAM (4G+). If you upgrade RAM, don't let apple do it, buy it aftermarket. I paid $60 for a 4G kit, apple was more than double.
I switched last year. Get a switchers guide. Open a terminal window and you are at the BSD/NEXT Step core. You can even use vi when feel the need. But it is fun seeing how the other half lives. Things are done differently. Sometimes it takes a little patience but you pick it up quick!
I just bought the MacBook Pro 13" last night, fooled with it some today... VERY IMPRESSED! Seems to run so much more effeciently than both of my PC's. It is a tad hard to get use to, but all of the apple stuff is super user friendly vid's and such.. I don't see myself ever buying another pc! Do it.....
Sitting here on it for another 10-15 minutes I'm still grinning. Maybe I'm an uber-nerd but all of the cool little features on these things is just kickass, they're very well thought out if you ask me. The screen's on the pro's are amazing, self dimming screen.. magnetic power cord to avoid yanking and breaking the case. Not to mention the things are metal, how cool is that! I have about 2 hours total on the machine, but from what I can tell they're so much more thought out and engineered better than a pc! I was weary of spending $1200 on a laptop that had the same "specs" as a $600 hardware wise, but from what i've been told, and can tell myself their operating system doesn't bog down the computer like on a pc, and you don't "need" the 4gig's ram, 300gig hard drive ect. Good luck!
