Actually some of us do use a Mac...Mac hardware. :) I'm also sure some of us have Macs with OSX at home.

Yeah, I've heard of more people using different hardware and configuring the Mac OSX to it. I tried following some of the conversations about that and got lost real quick. :D

You can't run OSX on something other than on an Apple. The firmware ties the OS to their hardware.

At least this is how it was the last I heard.

Hacks for OS X back to Leopard have been around that enabled running on non-Apple systems. EFiX dongle is a hardware solution that works.

Then you would have heard wrong. As Frank said, hacks have been out for awhile and know several people personally that are doing just this.
Someone's lying to you at Microsoft Central. :D

The guys at Microsoft are the last guys to the party on just about everything... GUI's, SQL, the Internets, search engines, .... :D

In the '90s I spent 6 years as a software engineer in Seattle (Sunshine I was one of the original Microsoft Java MVPs). I worked mostly on Windows at a company called Xypoint where the servers were all Solaris. The lead engineer was a mac head and I thought he was crazy. Eventually I started working with Linux dual boot on all my machines. It took a while to finally get a Mac, like last year. Mac OS X is UNIX, BSD -> NextSTEP -> OS X. Should of gone with Mac a long time ago.

I got out of software in '01. But now I'm unemployed and busted up, laying around the house recovering. Started looking at programming jobs again (can't do much physical labor for a while). So I'm tuning up my programming skills. I've got 2 laptops, MBP and Toshiba Vista. Which am I using? The Mac Book Pro! Xcode is the shit. Netbeans works great. The laptops are similarly configured, but the MBP is faster, easier to use, just more better. And, the things you can do on a stock Mac with video, movie making, pics, is amazing.

I understand if you are an office worker and not willing to learn how to do Office docs with iWorks. Besides companies aren't going to spend $ to re-outfit with Mac OS X. But if you plan to buy a new personal computer there is no reason to not buy a Mac. Unless you are like I was and blinded by the dark side.

Just got my mac, a 15 inch 2.8 processor, 500 hd, so far so good. The features it comes with are amazing, i can zoom into the screen, like an iphone, i can even do it on desktop or any other software. The touch pad is simply amazing, i can "right click" by simply clicking on the bottom right section of the pad. Scrolling down or up on websites is simply done by using two fingers on the touchpad, with the up or down motion. I can go back on safari by simply moving 3 or so fingers from the right to the left of the touchpad, fast...

These are some of the things ive discovered in two days. I still need to get down the shortcuts, and different options. Oh and mail... it's fucking great....

GUYS HELP! I need to use a couple very small window's specific programs, and was told I can run them in parallel's... Problem is seem all of the programs require you to buy windows to run in the parallel program. Is there a program where I can run windows specific programs w/o having to pay for windows that i'll never really use??

Alos, I just bought a cheapy dell for my home office (F_pc's... 30 minutes into it being plugged in and finally up and running, where the mac took literally 15 seconds) But the Dell came w/a windows disc, would that would on the mac?

You'll love it... I'm aggravated as F*** right now trying to setup this new pc desktop, miss my mac:eek: You know how much the one-2-one training @ the apple store is? I think it might be worth it, there is so many things I'm clueless about w/the mac (shortcuts, programs ect)

Not sure, but i dont find the computer complicated at all, i just need time for the different functions. As for the windows xp, look in craigslist they sell them for dirt cheap. Dont get vista you dont need the extra bs

Another option for now is to get Windows 7 RC. Its running very good on mine. Not sure if they've cut off the trial yet, but they're getting close. The RC is supposed to be good until June of next year.

Just another thought. I'm running it on Boot Camp on mine and its running awesome on its side! Funny, Windows program running faster on the flip side of a Mac machine.

As you said it...its a hack to get around the tye that Apple puts on their hardware. Just because you can do it doesn't mean you can do it. :D

You see...you were already one foot in the grave with Java. :D

I'm just kidding. Each OS and piece of hardware has their place....use whatever you like the most.

I'm gonna throw out my $0.02 here. Been using my Mac Book Pro 13" 2.5GHz for about a week now. Everything about it is perfect so far. I love the fact I can do my system maintenance via a terminal window just like the UNIX boxes I use every day (or used every day, I should say). Been rock solid, even with VMware Fusion running XP Pro.

And I have to say even XP runs faster on this thing then it ever did on any PC I've owned. Better hardware? Better use of resources? I don't know, but it's better in every way.

Hell ,even if you don't use the Mac OS X and only XP via Bootcamp, XP is MUCH better on the Apple hardware then on anything I've used from Dell, HP, IBM, Compaq or Toshiba and I've used them all over the years.

Over the last 8 days or so I've found myself going to XP less and less as I've acquired the Mac version of apps I used every day on Windows. It used to take me 1 hour and 30 minutes to transcode a video to play on my blackberry via Adobe Media Encoder CS4 on XP. Now with the Mac version of the same software, it takes 37 minutes!!! The PC I was doing it on was a dule core 2.5GHz just like the Mac. Same amount of RAM (4GB) same HDD speed.

From someone who has been an Apple hater for 15 years (check my previous posts, you'll see) I have to say I was wrong! I was VERY wrong! This is the best computer I've EVER owned! Period!

I've learned to be careful reading Frank's computer suggestions. Most of the times I feel dumb enough as it is, when I read what he writes with his computer knowledge, I feel ten times worse. :D
