I smoked for about 20 years. Made up my mind I was going to quit because I found it to be a disgusting habit and smokes were approaching $5 a pack. Lots of other reasons, but the key is you need to really make the choice to quit and be serious about it. Not thinking about it, really make the choice.
Anyway, everyone is different, but the patch worked perfect for me. Off the shelf Target generic brand. Don't remember the dosage, but did the highest mg for 4 weeks, the mid level for 2 weeks and then the lowest level for a week maybe. I began forgetting to put the lowest one on after taking a shower and didn't have any cravings. Figured I was past it. That was almost 10 years ago. Not a single minute in that time have I ever had the slightest craving to smoke. In fact, I see people smoking and I feel bad for them and it reaffirms how happy I am to be away from it. I think one of the benefits of the patch is it supplies your brain with nicotine while at the same time breaking your habit of taking a smoke break and the whole putting something in your mouth habit that some experience.
Good luck quitters. It's worth the effort by whatever means you choose.
