Stoner is great, and could beat the world on any bike ever with one hand tied behind his back holding a glass of milk, but beating him isn't an accomplishment at the same time. got it.

Pedrosa. Biaggi. Gibernau. Capirossi. Lorenzo. Mlandri. Barros. Dovi. Checa and Elias don't count now either? they're doing just as well as some of the other current prospects. that list of people is just as good as the list of Top 5's or Top 10's currently.

Marc is pretty much the only one he hasn't triumphed over. we'll see how Vinales and Zarco get on again this year but i'm not counting them yet. you guys are nuts.

The only thing worse than the Rossi nut swingers are the Stoner nut swingers. If, if, if, if and if my Aunt had balls she'd be my Uncle. Stoner isn't racing therefor he can't beat anyone that is racing. You can't win a championship you don't enter. That is a fact.

His podium celebration will be a spectacle to behold. The earth will shake and the roman guards at the front gate will say, "Surely he was the son of... " too much?

 

It's a sad truth of life that being the "Greatest of All Time" isn't the same as being the "Greatest Right Now or in the Near Future". Rossi's got a lot of good racing left, but he'd need a miracle to win another championship.

 

He doesn’t need a single miracle, but he needs 2 things to win another championship:

1. To be at the pointy end every weekend and consistently podium when he doesn’t win. The Yamaha factory bikes were totally lost last year so this might be a big ask.

2. For Marc to make mistakes and throw away points or suffer mechanical DNFs. I think he has the measure of everyone else on the field, which is fucking amazing given dude is 40 next year and has been racing GP since roughly the Stone Age. Marc making mistakes and throwing it away isn’t nearly as likely as it was a few years back. But if there’s one rider who can make Marc return to his red mist ways it’s Valentino.

It won’t take a miracle. It’ll just take a particular set of circumstances. He had those circumstances in ‘15 but he threw it away senselessly. I’ll bet that shit is the single biggest regret of his career.

 

but seriously man... who was Ago's competition? who else was great out there at that time? Phil Read, Hailwood towards the end of his time out there, Newcombe (sorta?), Barry Sheene towards the end of Ago's time... then you got Nieto... king of the mopeds who for whatever reason (i don't know the reason) never touched a big boy bike...

i dunno how you give him the GOAT title other than title count. Rossi def had a tougher go of it IMO from the competitors to the equipment to all of it...

It's not they don't count, but if you remove Lorenzo from that list, Pedrosa has won more GP race wins than the rest of your list combined. People argue that Rossi is the GOAT over AGO because AGO didn't have competition. Citing Rossi's competition is a counter argument against and it's not necessarily wrong. There is zero doubt that Rossi was light years better than everyone else from 2000-2006. When Rossi had to race against people equal to or better than him, his season win percentage dropped over 50%. Since the Rossi fan base had already granted him the title of GOAT before the new breed they don't want to unring that bell.
