Well, the one pictured must have run out of fuel (no prop rotation)....

 

Not sure what you are referring to but you can stop the props with a full gas tank.

 

Just an assumption as both engines were evidently not running (from the propeller condition) during the landing. Needless to say, the probable causes are indeed endless!

Here's an example of a guy that landed with the engine running.

 

The video specifically discusses the practice of shutting down engines to avoid prop strikes.

 

I was only watching a documentary yesterday about the WW2 Hawker Typhoon and how the pilots would do that if they had to make a belly landing. That plane had a huge prop (14') and combined with the big radiator under the engine made it prone to cartwheel sideways if it was spinning on landing.
