You sure about this...

Your not decreasing the area, the area is still the same. What you are allowing to happen is more air to the brakes so they don't lock up. The same concept behind a wave rotor... I could be wrong

Tcontradiction - You are correct in stating that the area stays the same but the surface area does change, which definitely reduces the braking force. Just seat of the pants testing but with one of these rotors it becomes a lot more difficult to lock up the rear wheel.
