If all you can get is 2500 sq ft in Iowa for $2500 a month then it has gotten terribly expensive. The 6000+ sq ft monstrosity the wife owns didn't cost $2500 a month.
A 6,000 sq ft house in central Iowa will easily run you $3 - $3.5 million +. That’s if you can even find a house that big. Anything in Ames, Cedar Falls and Iowa City will have a premium of 10-15% +. 2500 sq ft will run you $1-$2Million depending on location and acreage etc.
2500 would include food, all utilities, cable, someone ti cut the grass, house cleaner, swedish au pair, and plenty of shovels to bury your ex girlfriends in the back yard
Must be including a lot of average for 2500 sq ft to cost that much in Iowa. Otherwise California is cheap right now.

That’s crazy to me. Heck where I grew up suburbs of Peoria IL you can get a house that size that is nice for about 300k.
The sq ft on those are total finished it appears. Typically when discussing sq ft you are only considering above grade not basement, Just a quick glance clearly shows several of those houses are no where close to 2500 sq ft above grade.
