SpeedyE - I'm not looking to dispatch the squirrels. That's way too easy. I am asking if the wild ones can be trained to keep the frick off my feeder. I don't hate squirrels (or animals for that matter) but I'd rather enjoy seeing the birds eating from the bird feeder. The comment about breaking out the .410 could not possibly have been taken seriously. I mean, what the hell is going to be left of my precious bird feeder after I light that thing off? So can they be trained with the airsoft or what?
LOL! Bergs, my post wasn't directed at your post....was just a blanket statement, just info for everyone. I did appreciate you were looking for alternatives. I am not a squirrell specialist, don't know much about them....do know they are smart though I honestly can't answer your question. But I do know that the people at the hotline # I posted will have all the answers you need. I appreciate you trying to do the right thing by these little guys....and I do realize wildlife can be a pain in the ass....I just hate to see them killed for being themselves, if there are alternatives. Good luck
Holy crap SpeedyE, those pictures are crazy. I can't imagine holding a badger just weeks after being taken out of the wild! At least without a shark suit on
Squirrels love to eat/gnaw the insulation off wires under the hood of your car/truck. I thought it was mice until I busted them entering/exiting the truck wheel wells. $400 in repairs later, I kill everyone I see and encourage others to do the same. They'll also eat/gnaw the soffit / eaves / vents on your house, if they are plastic. Shoot'em.
Wild squirrels respond to the sound of two pecans rubbed together. Don't feed them from your fingers until they get used to you. Never make a sudden move when feeding.
Even if the post were directed toward me, it's all good, man. I think it takes some real sack to do what you do and seeing the pics you posted are humbling. It is something which is way outside of my comfort level but you clearly have a great connection with the environment. If only many more humans shared the same level of sympathy to their surroundings. I appreciate you taking the time to respond as well as put up those pics. Just to be clear, I have not trained my dog to attack other animals. Humans, sure, why the hell not, but animals are something he knows not to screw with unless there is a command given....and even then he doesn't inflict harm. Last week he actually stood a chance of catching a squirrel. Instead his choice was to chase ole Rocky down and "yell" at him as Rocky made a beeline for the nearest tree. That was the peak of my entertainment in this whole bird feeder thing. Sorry to let the masses down but as much as squirrels can be assholes, I'm not looking to kill them. Thanks again, Speedy
My mom has pet squirrels. Bird feeders everywhere. They'll come right into the house and take a peanut from anybody.
SpeedyE, we have a saying where I work: "You are one 'special guy'". It's said in jest and usually meant to mean a dude just aint quite right in the coconut, but you give it all new meaning. Just messing with you man. I appluad you brother, it truly does take someone 'special' to do what you do. Rock on.
I have a ton of respect for wildlife rescue types as they are able to communicate with animals on a level that most of us have yet to discover within ourselves.
Bergs, do you have bears much where you are? They aren't a problem down here, but I know they are attracted to people's bird feeders farther north. I'd say put some food on the ground for them and make the feeder harder to get to. They'll go for what's easy, although you may end up with turkeys, also. When I was a little kid, we had squirrels that would climb on the storm door in the morning and hang there until we brought them something to eat, which they would take from our hands, but I don't know if we trained them or they trained us.
Again, thanks much not just for the pics but for your meaningful and authentic words about respect and care for our wildlife, without which the world is a much less wonderful place. Regards, Charles R.
No bears that I'm aware of. I have yet to see bear tracks anywhere I've walked in the woods behind my house. We get plenty of turkeys walking through the yard.....sometimes 20+ at a time I agree that seeds on the ground is going to be the way to go here.
SpeedyE has a passion and he follows it. Or he's going loony like Tim Treadwell I'm not certain which.
I just got done reading all of your replies. I loved the funny comments and ribbing  I prolly shouldn't post this, but I have to...my eyes are welled up from reading your words. Your posts made my heart feel wonderful, I am feeling really emotional right now...I am feeling wonderful. I have always loved the racing community, it has always felt like family to me. I love you guys. Thank you so much
