No sarcasm. They have been great trucks. They get great mileage, and I haven’t had any issues. We only keep them for 2 years, but I put lots of road time on them.

^ Solid perspective. If you're only gonna own it for 5 years or so and less than 100k miles, it's unlikely you'll encounter any of the 'diesel' problems anyway, and while the fuel is more costly the 87 or even 91 the other trucks run on, the $/mile is kind of a wash, and you enjoy more range.

Unfortunately even the gas v8 stuff isn't quite so simple anymore with everything having hydraulic or electronic variable valve timing, direct injection in addition to port injection in some cases etc etc.

I know it's anecdotal but my buddy bought a 2018 F150 5.0 in 2020 and is now coming up on 100k miles and says if he followed the 10k mile oil change intervals he'd damn near burn through all the oil. The truck is burning almost a quart every 12-1500miles, but appears totally fine otherwise (no smoke etc).

And to add insult to injury, Ford says this is within the parameters of what they consider acceptable. Wild

It is normal for many cars, my Audi owner manual say 1/2 q every 600 miles.
Newer cars don't leak oil like old ones, they just burn it.

    Yup

Thinner oil and looser oil rings to meet CAFE standards.

When I drove the giant purple dildodge to Maine, in a 4500 mile round trip I used 5 gallons of oil.

To be fair, though, that’s at >300k miles.

I don't think an oil change is the kind of use that's being cried about. :D

Once a year I spin a new oil filter on, whether it needs it or not. :D
