    Question for the drivers:

I have a reefer that stays on, an APU that goes on and off while I am sleeping, but I don't have a smoke detector in the cab. I just noticed that last night.

    Seems it would have one.

    Do I really need one?

Take a look at the opening pic of the truck in the vid. What do you think those mirrors see. Dude was almost entirely looking out the rear window of the cab. FedEx guy I see several times per afternoon blind sides into places I'd never try and he does it nearly as fast as you can do it sight side.

I'm too afraid of hitting something. I've had a couple of minor incidents trying to get into places that big trucks really didn't belong. My company gives celebratory days off (w/o pay) for anything that results in a $500 claim. Don't take much of a bump to get to $500. Just lost two days last week due to a rotten wooden barrier right next to a tight pit dock that I had to blind side into due to improper snow plowing. They put in a claim for $1800 for a 6' high wooden Menards fence section that was 8' long, supported on two 4x4's.

I'm too nice a guy sometimes. Quite a few of the guys I work with would tell dispatch to go to hell, they won't deliver to some of these places.

I never bothered but a carbon monoxide detector isn't a bad idea.

    Another question for the drivers:

    CB or no CB?

I was told CB's are like the internet; lots of anonymous morons spewing garbage.

Yes, it's nice to know whats up down the road from drivers going the other way. Also a great way to talk smack about all those idiot 4 wheelers who don't know how to drive.:D

You need better mirrors - or adjust the fisheyes better. You should be able to see the back corner of the trailer at full lock. I do like have remote adjustable mirrors so I can move the big ones but the fisheyes work with some practice.

Doing whats in the video is easier in a daycab for sure just for the turning radius but that really wasn't that hard of a spot to get into at all.

Yes on the CB. Get a good one, get good antennas, make sure it's installed properly.

Then leave it off most of the time and use it for backups.

Well, here's your assignment for tomorrow.

I docked at a vendor today. Once I docked, it was twenty paces from the front of my truck to the back of the trailers lined up in front of me.

If it pace was 3 feet, that's sixty feet. 53 foot trailer + 15 feet for the truck, maybe. Too damn right.

Worst thing is the 15 feet of room on the other side of those trailers. That pissed me off.

Hell, no. I do not need comments from the peanut gallery when I am backing up.

The cb is like gps,its a tool.It has saved my ass many times.I don't get on it to jaw jack, but its nice when theres shut downs, and locals to help you out.
The smoke detector is pretty common for a lot of drivers, just a cheapo from the dollar store.
I think ive got pneumonia.Ive been to the dr. 2 times since December, and this shit wont go away!! Got another dr. visit this afternoon, and going
to insist on a chest x-ray.You guys keep the dirty side down!

    :D

I was thinking more the traffic jam type of backup. Usually a local on the radio who knows a good way around it for a big truck.

Hell, I've joined in at truck stops making fun of the non drivers

I was talking traffic backups, not reversing into a parking spot...

I have seriously considered offering to park someones truck hundreds of times, it hurts my head seeing how many of them have no feel at all for where their truck is.
