Between the ones that want $500 for a DOC fee, $400 for pinstripes (stick ons no less), jacking up prices by thousands over MSRP, I found one that does even more shady crap. A new car dealer an hour from me had around 5-6 "used" 2022 trucks that each one had UNDER 70 miles. A Tundra that msrp'd around $56K they were listing it at "Dealers best low price" of $68K. Hell they had a 2020 Tacoma TRD Pro with 50K miles on it for $55K 'on sale'. How the fuck do they get "used" vehicles with that little mileage? Definately some shenanigans. I seriously hope once the manufacturers can get back to full production, these dealers that played all these fuck you games end up out of business.
Toyota probably limits markup so they sell them to a shil buyer then they can move them to the used lot and make any profit they want
Money laundering, perhaps. My daughter had a customer that bought a new, expensive SUV with cash which she happened to see sitting on a competitor's lot 2 days later. The next week, the guy was back for another new high-end sale with cash. That one also ended up being resold within days to another dealer. The guy sold both cars for less than he had just paid. When he showed up to buy a third car he had to talk to the sales manager and the dealership owner after which he was escorted from the property and told to never return. They suspected he was laundering drug money.
did the buyer watch At Close Range, on laser disc or VHS, before commiting these alledged "crimes"???
Just watched a short YouTube clip where the CEO of Ford said they are trying to get away from the "dealership" operations... and need to move to the Tesla style. He also sent letter to dealers stating if Ford catches them raising prices way above msrp... the dealer loses 3 months of new vehicle supply... after 3rd strike... Ford will pull the dealership license!
the irony there while the author saw his compensation triple...lol I say let the dealerships add whatever ADM fees they want. Makes you wonder how Google can target direct customers but car dealers who get names, numbers, & addresses cant use incentives to expand customer bases?
The wife and I were out browsing cars this weekend too. Ford dealer asking 20k over retail on Broncos had me shaking my head. No way I'm paying 20k over for any car. Then we noticed more than a few cars on a Honda used lot with less than 10,000 miles that were '21-22's. Some less than 3000 miles and 3 brand new broncos on the Honda used lot. Things definitely seem shady out there.
Got a whole bunch of them here. Hell I did it on conversion vehicles (both paint & decal). $400 for stick on pinstripes is nuts. Especially when a $40 roll does around 10 vehicles. Pinstipes on new cars is just out of place.
Buddy of mine from college is a GM at a dealership. I asked him the same question, what the hell? Basically, for his cars (high end sports cars) there are people with Montana business licenses who will find and buy high end cars and buy them from the dealership at MSRP or slightly over. No taxes etc. For Montana registration and then they run them through auction where dealerships buy them. Because they can't get new models from the manufacturer, they end up paying 10K over MSRP just to have high demand cars on their lot. They then mark them up 20K cause there are enough stupid people out there who will over pay to have the newest hot thing on 4 wheels. Absolutely insanity to me.
We’re looking for a used, older car or suv for the kid. Have not gone to a dealer yet but looking online at prices I’d have to agree with the OP’s statement. it’s interesting to watch. I’d say hilarious if we weren’t on the edge of it.
I saw a guy on beechtalk...airplane forum where there's a lot of money, anyway....he listed his new Rivian R1T Adventure edition...4 motors...big battery etc. The pimp mobile WHICH did originally sell for like 75-80K but when they announced a new cheaper version at like 70K they jacked the price of this model up to over 100K. This guy got in early and when he final got the truck he flipped it. Asking 118K and it sold in 5 days. 75 miles on it. Of and mileage doesnt mean its new or used. Most states define used as "titled before" so you can have a fordota that was used for marketing, press loaner, etc that was never titled be sold as "new" with thousands of miles. And if you buy 1 new with 5 miles, title it and drive it home to flip its used.
Some of the “used” cars may have been demos, loaners or even manufacturer’s program car (executive or employee driven). My A3 5 door was a car titled by the US branch and driven by one of the higher up wife for a few months. I grabbed it with less than 5K on the odometer and got huge dollars off and the new car warranty (which was shit - like 2 years or 50 feet). Some, like others said, are just bullshit.
New GR86 with Subaru engine has extra RTV near the oil pickup, customer loses motor, and Toyota refuses to warranty because he autocrossed the car. Mind you Toyota gives you a free trackday with a purchase. https://www.facebook.com/groups/sccaofficial/permalink/940892587310970/
I know a guy who over the last 2 years orders a ton of desirable vehicles. Puts down a small deposit and usually has a buyer before they come in. He buys them and spins them in a day or so and pockets several grand on each. It's been good so far but it will eventually dry up. That's where the 70 mile used vehicles come from as he's not the only one doing it.
Yeah, car flipping is a thing now. My buddy has some friends that own dealerships and bought the new Bronco (the real one, not the lady "Sport" version), drove it for 3 months and sold it 20k more than he paid for.
Dealer uses them as service or parts trucks for minimal mileage, can then sell for more than Toyota allows.
I have a hard time seeing that Ford wants that long term. Many of the dealerships in town make more money on their bodyshops and repair shops than they do selling cars. You can only hire so many mobile repair guys and there's only so much that they can do while mobile. Add in all the purchasing problems, every lowlife up here has shitty credit and just lives for their next monthly payment....my car sales buddy at Ford said he spends HOURS trying to get financing straightened out on new vehicle and the trade in some times. Just wait until this cheap interest goes away....won't be long.
