Crazy, how many of us on here have thought about buying it and some smart people did. When I sold my commercial building back in 20 ish, I talked about taking everything left over after paying the mortgage and a few other loans and throwing it in bitcoin. Instead I threw that all in the S&P 500, so I'm sure I did okay, but not double or tripling my money okay. I know Tyler bought some somewhere in the 60's a few years ago and has been upside down. I congratulated him today and he said don't get too excited for me, I'm only up $32 at this point, over 4 years. LOLOLOL I know there is a racer dad from the SE that has invested in it consistently every week/month for years.....for you I AM VERY HAPPY!!!!! I always stink at names, but i think his first name is Clay!! Congratulations Clay!
So far I've proven I'm too big of a wimp to do it. I was stung so badly years ago playing the stock market, it has kept me from playing the cyrpto game. If I was as aggresive now, as I was years ago, I would have already loaded up when I first considered this in the 2010-11 timeframe. I knew racers that were playing with it back then, when it was under 10K. I also know a racer that was sponsored by a guy that supposedly made 10o's of millions playing with that stuff. Since he paid for said racers entire big rig and MA racing program for multiple years, I think that investor probably did rake it in with bitcoin. Wish my balls weren't chopped off back in the early 2000's with the dot com bubble.
Ya know, there's some middle ground between being scared and just investing in ETF's and going balls deep on crypto.... If you must pick one or the other, stick with the s&p
I agree, and being old skool, like I am, I'm still in a S&P 500 mutual fund instead of an ETF. Most of it is in 401k's so it may not matter? Actually just looked, and the Fidelity 500 Index Fund (FXAIX) I'm in, has a net expense ratio of 0.015%. If I'm reading this right, the SPY EFT is 0.0945% so it is actually 6x more than my old skool mutual fund? I guess I haven't been screwing the pooch over these past few years after all?
Hilarious. I just posted in the investment thread. LOL It's not like I have a ton of $ in it. I'm a bit of a prepper so I put my eggs in several baskets. If, say, I were a trucker and some authoritarian despot leader were to seize one or all of my bank accounts, it'd hurt; but I'd still be just fine for quite a while. Crypto still feels weird to me. I do like the fact that, currently, no government controls it. It's every bit (Ha!) as real the bits in your bank account. I'm looking forward to seeing how BRICS plays out over the next few years.
It's like any other gamble...don't put in more than you can afford to lose. I on the rare occasion like a couple hours at a casino playing blackjack....so I find a $2 table if the place has one and get $50-100 in chips...sit down and I play that money. Any winnings I get during that time, I set aside. When my initial in-money is gone, I have a decision point. If my "winnings" are greater than what I put in initially, I'll probably walk away. If they're less...I may use it to keep going and see what happens. Worst case using that Boolean logic, I've lost money I don't mind losing. I had an hour or two of entertainment, and I stopped when it was fun. I kind of did that with an 401K I rolled over in to an IRA. About 10 years ago I had the holding firm restructure the IRA in a way I could move money myself. I made one move. I put half in Apple and half in Google and let it ride. It's now 10 times what it was when I made that move. It's enough to pay off my house if I wanted, but the money's still growing so I just let it ride.
Congratulations on the Apple and Google move, I always love it when people I know hit it! Hope it lets you retire early someday, if you want to.
Well shoot, I guess I should have tried @Clay I was doubting my memory, in the story above!! Congratulations again!!!
Retirement for me means possibly a relocation and a career change to something different. After over 30 years of this. I’m ready for a change. And I hope to be in a position where I don’t care what that job pays.
Oh, headed to Cali? C'mon, the water is warm, the food is good, and the chicks are beautiful!!!! Oh yea and the weather is amazing.
LOL, that is a figure of speech, but it is warm in the swimming pools and it is very warm compared to most of the rest of the US right now. Regarding murkiness, @motion is just pissed he sold his place and moved out of here 10-15 years ago. Had he stayed, he would of had way more scratch and could have probably upgraded to a small condo in the small region he considers the best place in the world to live. https://www.zillow.com/dana-point-ca-92629/monarch-bay-club_att/ In reality the only places he would consider are probably all over 15-20 million. This is one in the area Richard would be willing to "low rent" it in. https://www.zillow.com/homedetails/426-Monarch-Bay-Dr-Dana-Point-CA-92629/25580755_zpid/. Here is a lot, he could rent some Royal Enfields from. https://www.zillow.com/homedetails/14-Ritz-Cove-Dr-14-Dana-Pt-CA-92629/2054388785_zpid/ This condo is probably too far away from the water, but with a slight ocean view......and it is a condo.....so too low rent for him. https://www.zillow.com/homedetails/51-Monarch-Beach-Resort-S-Dana-Point-CA-92629/2096707517_zpid/
Yeah that's nice, one of my favorites is Santa Barbara, Montecito area, the Mountains face South, so it warms the area during the winter, but nice weather year around. Then you have a nice view of the channel island's Great canyon riding through Ojai up that way
I'm DONE with coastal states. Overall, the Management of any and all states connected to a large body of water all completely fucking suck. Not sure where it will be. I would love to work for NightHawk Customs in Arkansas..watch their gunsmiths make some of the finest pistols ever. Staccato in Texas would be a dream job too. I don't care what it is...I'll clean toilets for them. But a state where shit makes sense, taxes are low or reasonable relatively free of natural disasters. Wyoming, Montana, Iowa, Tennessee, and places like that all appeal to me.
