Lots of time to ponder things while waiting for the uncoupling of my marriage (see divorce thread). I've owned a bunch of "sport-tourers" over the years. I have always enjoyed the that style of riding. I have also owned a few "adventure" bikes and done quite a bit of that riding too. And of course the sport bike and racing type too. The bike riding has become less and less as time goes on, I'm 64 about to turn 65in December take note @Dave K, don't forget). A lot of why its slowed down is my soon to be ex had lost her confidence and desire to ride. I always set her up on a capable bike to ride along on the adventures. She currently has a 700GS with the from BMW lowering kit. She gets to keep it, as I bought it for her. It's for sale by the way, she hasn't ridden in at least two years. I've had VFR 800, VFR 1200, Ducati 1200 Multi, Pikes Peak and Enduro, Africa Twin. Currently have an Indian FTR. So, short story long, I want to get back into the sport touring stufff. A 2016, 2017 ish BMW R 1200 RS really looks like it would be perfecto. What should I know about them. Which one of you knot heads has one? Which one of you knot heads has one to sell? Fire away.
I have a 2016 and really like it. I rode it to work today. I had a 2016 S1000XR before that and it was overkill, the RS engine has nice torque and you don't have to hammer it every time you get on. I did have to put a higher screen on due to buffeting but it's smoothed out now. I will say the quick shifter is a little clunky in the lower gears, but it was on the XR too. Truth is I don't use it that much. I'm happy, it's a gentlemans sport bike. I'm turning 64 next month myself. And yes, everything is for sale
BMW riders are weird. They won't acknowledge your existence unless you can document half a million miles on a bike. Get a Ducati, learn to say desmodromic with an Italian accent, and wave your arms around when you talk. Good things will follow. Disclaimer: I have owned an R90 for forty years. It's starting to grow on me.
Just turned 62 yesterday. Have had nearly all sport or sport standards for many years. Finding it hard to ride more than an hour on most of my current flock, so bought a clean 2014 FJR. Enough power to keep me entertained, and handles well enough if you get the suspension set up correctly, and surprisingly well for a 640 lb bike. I've had it almost to the edge of the tire, and it's very stable. Definitely has extended my riding range, without being boring.
I got this FTR, thinking I would take it for short rips since my riding partner had given up on riding. Who am I kidding, I'm 6'4" and I'm good for aboa half hour scrunched up on that thing. Extending time in the saddle is what I'm looking for. Good replies from all, thanks. Except @motion
Don't think you can go wrong. I love my 2018 S1000R. That generation (and yours you're looking at) I think are a really solid build. I can't speak for the engine in the RS, but the S1000 engine in the R, RR, and XR is really smooth. The ABS/TC package is great. The QS/AB is great. The brakes are phenomenal. If you haven't yet, consider the XR as well. Maybe ride both and compare. Good luck with your search!
Having owned both, as BrentA says you can stretch your legs out a bit more on the S1000' s than the RS. My XR was a fantastic bike, but I knew I'd get myself into trouble on it. That's why I sold it to my brother!
Like Tristan say, there is reason GS is boxer to buy. At 6'4" you fit right on it. I have 2011 and love it, did not want to buy newer water cooled.
I found this one not too far away. Seems all right https://www.macscycle.com/inventory...on-wa-99403-12594287i?utm_source=motohunt.com
Unless your legs are disproportionally short, go to a BMW dealer and take a spin on an RS and a GS and report back.
If you don't care about wheelies and shit, you might also consider a F900XR (I have one). The S1000XR mentioned above might be a consideration if you do want wheelies.
