Take a poll: Matt Scholtz breaks Garett Gerloff lap record after 8 years

Discussion in 'General' started by 05Yamabomber, May 9, 2025.

?

Is it fair that the record was broken on a NGSS bike and not a 600cc?

  1. Hell Yah its fair NGSS still counts!

  2. Should have an asterisk next to it since it wasnt on a 600!

  3. Same as MotoGP, bike CCs change and records change with technology and tires.

  4. Should be a different track record for NGSS bikes

It has to be accepted as a new record otherwise every record needs unlimited asterisks to note the weather, tires, ecu tuning, the general vibes, etc.

Since NGSS are electronically limited, it’s sort of up to MA /FIM how fast they want to let them be. It seems to me the R9 is allowed to be strong out of the gate. If they get limited some more in the future, does the record still stand? A 900cc triple or a 950cc twin are weird bikes to hold 600cc records. But we also allow 750cc twins into Lightweight Twins now so whatever….

No replacement for displacement....NGSS not a 600 cc only class.

It’s not the same. Key factors are triples, link, swing arm, etc..

    HP is similar.

    But torque is up 40%.

HP and torque, ECU, tires…all that’s cute. The real question is what kind of oil was run and did the rider have a hamburger or cheeseburger prior to the lap?

^^^ LOL. I was actually thinking GG was probably on one of the last versions of the UK Dunlops. But the tires we have now are pretty incredible too.

Kaleb still holds some of the twins lap records even with the advances in the class, the tires, and Demario being the missile that he is. Demario is consistently faster, though.

Back in 2022 when I was riding my best, I can remember running a club race at Homestead on the FZ07, I was on my Laguna takeoffs and I got second in the race doing 6 laps in a row all within .01 of each other. When I came in I was shocked because I could tell you a corner that I screwed up on each of those laps, but I guess I did another one better somewhere.

The Perfect Lap- it's out there somewhere!

A few years back, my 8yr daughter commented that practice doesn’t make perfect… and I did a double take to correct her. And then she said “practice makes better.”

The perfect lap may be out there, but I just hope for better laps ahead.

Does Scholtz have a stutter? Watching an interview with him and it seemed he had a minor stutter and a tick.

As for the bike, I have no idea other than the instagram snippet with Hayes showed the bike as being pretty trick.

I never noticed anything unusual regarding his speaking patterns during my lengthy conversations with him at Danny Walker's American Supercamp a few weeks ago and again last weekend at Road Atlanta.
Perhaps he get's nervous speaking on-camera, but the only thing I've noticed is his SA accent, which I feel is less than Robbie Petersen's.

The other question is what was the 600 class rules back when GG got the record. Wasn't there a time that the 600's were pretty bad ass?

What about 500 2T GP VS 990/800/1000 4T MotoGP? If you subtract that pesky 500CC championship aren't Valentino and Marc tied for the most MotoGP championships? :Poke::Pop::Poke:

As the last few posts have indicated, Matt’s record absolutely stands. Classes evolve. Even if the displacement never changed, advances in tech would’ve eventually resulted in the same thing. No one says that hailwood or ago still have lap records because the class evolved and it’s not fair that future riders had faster bikes. That’s just part of all motorsports.

Is a good reminder though of just how fucking fast Garrett is though, considering it stood this long and he was still a teenager at the time.
