Anyone have any thoughts on replacing the rear shock with an aftermarket vs having a porper spring installed and reworking the oem unit on a 96 rs125?

Think it comes down to cost. Spring and rebuild and revalving runs about $600 when a new Penski runs about $1000

    Verify your spring. Hyperco springs
generally run around $100. This may
    solve alot of your problems.

If not rebuild and revalve run about $400.
(pretty close to what Bill said, but
if you are way off on the spring,
try that first for $100, then see
    where you are, unfortunately valving
and spring rate tend to follow each
    other)

A "properly selected" shock of course
would be optimal, but kinda depends on budget.

Get with Max at Traxxion.com for details,
he usually hangs out on the Wera main board
and is always willing to help.

I think there is a lot more to it than just comparing a revalve price to the price of a new Penske.

In addition to working correctly out of the box, a Penske is way more adjustable than the stock unit and easier to work on. I got my penske because I was at the end of the adjustment for ride height on the stock unit. Of course, this also means you can tune yourself into a hole if you are not careful.

That being said, I paid significantly less than $1000 for the penske on my RS. Call Speed-werks of Camden, DE at (302)672-7223 and ask them what the racer price is for a Penske. I think you 'll be surprised.
