It was good to see Mir actually finish a race and be competitive.

 

I may have told this story but heat stroke is a serious thing…

circa 2004 I came in from a stint of the VIR endurance race and almost crashed at pit entrance… all the way at the beginning of pit lane before the team set ups, there was an ezup there for track officials or something… it was hot like 94 degrees with 95 % humidity just straddling the dew point all day… some guys don’t listen and don’t drink enough water and work in offices and have assistants waiting on them hand and foot instead of pouring concrete all day… well, these guys come in from a stint early and let down their team and then rather than helping out and or drinking water and recovering, they strip down to their whitey tideys and wonder off in their own little world…

that’s what happened this day… as I pulled on to pit lane my line of sight was changed to something I’ll never forget… a friend of mine that rode for another team was standing in his underwear arms up on the ezup in his best Joe Dirt carnival ride operator pose with his mullet blowing in the wind….

I almost crashed at the sight of it and went and found his dad to go fetch him standing there in his skivvies and race boots, nothing else…

luckily for me I’ve poured enough mud and done enough manly things to not get heat stroke

 

do we know that he didn’t think the race was over and unzipped? I didn’t see if he’d let off and just sat up riding off line like a cool down lap…

 

Dealing with heat is also something developed over time. I worked hard shoveling gravel and other manual labor construction jobs, but that was at 9k’ in the Rockies. I remember going through an Army training thing before a deployment. It was in Fort Jackson SC in August and temps were high 90s with ridiculously high humidity. I was dying, while a buddy who grew up in the Louisiana Bayou wasn’t even cracking a sweat. I’ll bet the locals in India didn’t think the heat was a big deal compared to the typical euros.

 

I completely agree and he just had an off day… like many of them do but it doesn’t get blasted on the media about. He’s no Eskimo and no matter where his Mediterranean base line is set he’s known no other life I’d bet…

 

I haven't seen all the comments yet, but it does seem like people are giving JM the benefit of the doubt. I'm not. I'm guessing they probably have the camera feed for when he unzipped it. Watch his head, right before he zips it up. He saw himself on one of the Jumbotrons, saw that they were looking at his leathers, and then zipped them up. He knew full well he was going to get in trouble...you can see him do a double take, and then yank them up.

Got heat stroke during an endurance at Grattan. Puked in my helmet during my stint, but the crew didn't see me signaling I needed to come in. By the time I came in, my vision was impaired, and I had very little control of my hands. Got off the bike and laid in the pit, and started shivering....not a good sign. They covered me with bags of ice, but for some reason nobody thought to get an ambulance crew to check me out. I came out of it a couple hours later, but felt hungover for days. Finally went to the hospital at home, and had an IV to fill me back up.

 

I suspect he did try to air out, and under the circumstances, it was the right thing to do. No idea if he still had his chest protector.

 

Anyone ever think that for some dumb reason his (JM89) airbag went off ???

Many speculations but until we see the footage, we'll never know if he really pulled it down.

And yes, I do think he pulled it down but don't think it had anything to do with heat stroke.

 

Wellll.....the right thing to do, would be pull in and seek medical attention. I can't say I've never done that, but it's a stupid choice to make. Problem is, your judgement starts to go out the window when you get that hot. I finally bought an ice vest, which was an INCREDIBLE improvement. It was really crazy how I could be 40 minutes into a stint, and could still be mentally sharp, and I could see other people clearly getting brain fade from the heat.

 

Can we talk about El Diablo wearing pearls? Is that some sort of fashion statement? Another Ianonne in the making?

I'm surely no lady killer, when I was young I did okay, but nothing compared to my best friend.
