And for the record I put a tire dated 2018 on my SV this year ran top 5 and even won a race in AHRMA with it. So I totally understand and agree with your general way of thinking. What I don't agree with your statement is when we are talking about front runners in a pro series chasing a championship. If I see a tire assigned to Uribe dated 2024 and then after Q1 in Parc Ferme' I see his competitors on a tire dated 2025 I'm going to talk to my team manager about it. Team management can handle how they deem fit.
That's a cute fantasy you have there but as far as I can remember I think Pirelli beat Dunlop back in the day a handful of times. And this is back in the day when they were already a WSBK control tire.
... or maybe his best lap wasn't quite as fast, but his tire lasted longer so his overall race pace was faster?
Our last endurance race we had a (rear) 22’ tire and a 23’ tire. Same compound (med ) and both went over an hour at the same pace. The only change we made was 1/2 less air in the rear. I don’t think it made a difference but some riders are picky
I'm no expert, but I've heard, if stored properly, within 5 years they are good? On another note, I remember when I first bought my M5 with a supercharger that supposedly made 560HP at the crank. It would spin the tires in first, second and a bit in third, before hooking up. That seemed so awesome at the time. I thought it was because the car was so hopped up, because I never had that much HP before. Well after about a year of ownership, I put on a set of new Michelin Pilot Sport 4S and they would break loose a little hitting second, or jumping on it in first, but the car was much more controllable with new rubber. Then I thought, wow my Viper would have been much more controllable, if I had put new rubber on it, versus trying to wring every mile out of the stock tires.
I mean if I recall correctly, at Daytona the last couple years Pirelli has been the tire of choice for like 75-80% of the field despite most of the front runners surely having waaaaaay more data on Dunlops. Gonna say the game has changed.
I didnt search, but didn't Dunlop win the past couple years? For some reason i seem to remember them sweeping the podium in 2024?
Didn't cam or josh race Laguna wsbk wild card same weekend as motoamerica and the pirelli were so much better he could brake way later? Also attack last year with Jake I think they learned something in the brakes. Sounded like Dunlop was playing catch-up and came out with a slightly better front for harder braking.
For the life of me I can't find it, but I remember seeing an article where they put an expert level rider on new and 6-7 year old NOS Pirellis at Pittrace. I do remember the results though, it was less than 2 tenths a lap difference.
That’s interesting and would be a great article to read. It matches our experience on the old Dunlop stuff one weekend. I actually don’t think Ty saw any performance difference, just our initial preconceived notion it wouldn’t be as good?
Would to have had to have been Gagne or JD. Those were the only to IIRC that participated in WSBK those years.
