Replacing cv axles on an 85 300TD.
    Just stuck on the seals.
I've been using a seal puller gizmo that looks like an ice pick, no joy and no movement.

Any tricks of the trade would be welcomed.

I put a couple of rounds of 44 Mag into the diff of a Dodge Ram and it blew one of the axle seals out. It worked, but I wouldn't recommend that.

3 jaw slide hammer puller loaner from most auto parts stores. Possibly some heat.

That ice pick is just ripping through right? Either use a pry bar in the same manner and lever it or chisel the edge inward to make it smaller then repeat with prybar

  7. If you don’t have a proper slide hammer / puller a piece of delrin ground down to resemble a chisel. Or metal chisel if you trust yourself. If I’m picturing correctly what I think you are running in to they are a bitch if that old as they are basically bonded at that point from heat cycling and when the materials in the seal degrade they adhere to the pores in the metal.

T'is like they're welded in there.
Sucks I'm laying on my back and can't get good leverage.
Gonna remove rear muffler section to allow more room.

Just found a short pry bar. If that don't do it I'll find a slide hammer tool.

    Cheers lads!!

Slide hammer. Def slide hammer. They may as well be welded. I’ve had to slide hammer them to pieces and peel the rest out like oranges before. It’s a bih, but you’ll get it

Damn pry bar worked a charm. First attempt on each seal.

Something even easier: As you're sliding the axle out, stop before it's all the way out and use the axle itself to pry the seal out.

Johnny, I can't for the life of me, see how that could work.

Guarantee ya, that's the first time I've used that pry bar.
Was left in the shed by previous home owner, 20 years ago.
Glad I held onto it now :)

OK, I just caught the "cv" part. Never mind.
When I was replacing seals on rear wheel drive solid axles, using the axle itself was the trick. Just cock the axle tip in the seal and it pops right off.
(Reference if you ever do a rear axle seal.)
