I am drilling and cleaning up the front disc for my SR project. Is it best
to have the surface as smooth as possible or does it need a little bite to it ?

You want a smooth, non-directional finish. Ideally, you'd have the rotors finished on a Blanchard rotary surface grinding machine. Some people use emery cloth or 80 grit abrasive roll to finish by hand after machining it as smooth as possible. They even make a flexible hone for rotors and flywheels.

Remember to chamfer each hole after you drill it or the sharp right angle edge on the hole will dig into the pad.

Rotor hones are fast and easy and do a nice job.
