After a decent concussion this weekend I was wondering if anyone had input on a better lid to buy to resist them. I was going about 35mph in the rain and got throttle happy in a corner.. Got knocked out for maybe 15 seconds then couldn't open both eyes at once or walk or talk right but was fine the next day. I am going to take a month off at least and wanted to get the best helmet to reduce head impacts regardless of cost. I was wearing a 4 year old HJC RPHA 11 that had a couple crashes on it but no cracks.
One that hasn’t been crashed ever would be a great start. Helmets are one-impact only as the foam liner crushes in against your noggin. It will provide less protection for the next impact. SHARP results are an ok way to compare the protection of different helmets. But the helmet has to fit which will probably prevent you from just picking something with their 5 star rating. https://sharp.dft.gov.uk/helmets/hjc-rpha-11/
So basically you were enrolled in a study of the effects of concussions… Good on you for taking it seriously now. I'd say find the shell that best fits your head among the top brands.
I learned at a young age to always buy and wear the vey best helmets I could find. I've been wearing Arai's for 39 years now, with the exception of one trials helmet I bought. See more helmet discussion here: https://forums.13x.com/index.php?threads/seeking-helmet-opinions.382093/page-5
6d is the leader in this field the laat I checked. Their system is designed to reduce concussions. Bell has two different technologies: Flex and Mips. The Flex features a liner intended to manage the smaller shocks in a better manner. Mips is a thin liner that allows the helmet to rotate separately from your head to reduce rotational concussions.
HJC is perfectly sufficient but I believe the expiration as far as racing is concerned is 3 years. But don’t quote me on that. However, helmets are one and done. Having a “couple crashes” on it is inexcusable. If it touches the ground, it’s done. Period. Nonnegotiable. The structural integrity is not something that can be determined by a visual inspection. And they are designed to take a single impact and spread the load throughout the entire shell during that one impact, even if light. Thus the entire shell is compromised after even only minor contact with the ground. Literally dropping your helmet from waist height is enough to warrant replacement and no, I’m not exaggerating.
OP: Glad you're OK and doing your due diligence! The best helmet for you is the one you'll wear with confidence, so for me that means fit and ventilation are big factors (in addition to the cert). A single helmet cannot protect for every type of impact. When I'm riding slowly through the woods on my dirty bike I wear a DOT lid with a polycarbonate shell, because I feel they absorb small impacts better. When I'm lined up at the start line on a roadrace course I wear an ECE or Snell rated lid. Pick what is important to you, try them all on, then buy 2 so you can send the first one back for inspection after a crash. -Tom
Uff. Sorry to hear you knocked yourself out. However, as others have pointed out, the brand was not the problem, this was: Any reputable brand (including HJC) will offer largely-equivalent impact performance. The differentiating factors are fit and comfort. I like KYT the best. An added bonus in my head is that the US importer of KYT, @gpstar748, is a fellow WERA (and IOMTT) competitor.
To be perfectly clear and pedantic... all helmet systems are designed to reduce concussions. 6D is doing some neat innovation in the field, but scientific studies on the subject have so far failed to find any statistically-significant differences between 6D's approach and a standard EPS liner.
I started out with Shoei in the 80's,but moved to Arai.Been with them every since.Several concussions,as there's no helmet that can prevent that. Please remember in the future,as said above! One and done!! I've trashed, and gave away some nice Arai lids over the yrs.If I crashed it,and hit my head its done! This one made it one ride, and me in the hospital for 4 days.I never wore it again
I’ve crashed tested AGV’s and KYT’s, both with decent bonks to the head. I walked away fine after both. no data to backup my claim but yeah, I bought a new helmet right after it hit the ground. I’m weird about it that shit and would rather spend the $$$$ for something new than run something that took a hit. Hope it’s a lesson learned for you.
Seriously? I’ve had an Aria Corsair X IOM I used 3 days before crashing it sitting in my closet for 3 years. It had scrapes on just the chin, but I tumbled a lot. I replaced it just in case. It’s going to be over 5 years in a few months, so too late at this point.
I got a concussion wearing an AGV helmet, it also depends where you hit your head when you crash. I have also been down in a few Arai helmets with good damage and not had my bell rung like I did with the AGV. I was seeing stars literally.
I've always believed this. At the same time helmets are required to withstand multiple impacts in an accident and still maintain their protection. Based off that I don't think twice about a helmet that was dropped. As long as I'm the dummy who dropped it.
this rings true. I smashed myself with my KYT way harder than I did in my AGV but walked away OK from both. The KYT looked like it was left on a highway and hit by traffic. my ankle and tailbone didn’t survive quite as well.
