John Lee Hooker, BB King, Robert Johnson, Elmore James, Jimmy Reed, Eddie Taylor, etc... The roots of most all guitar Honorable mention to those above:up:
uhh... John Williams and Andres Segovia? technical talent speaking, two of the best to ever touch a guitar. classical guitar is just so far beyond any ability to play rock or metal riffs fast in its complexity... the thought process behind it, playing it, composing it just blows me away. John Williams' cd Diablo Suelto is just plain ridiculous. EVH and Clapton are the most talented rock players ever too IMO, not necessarily feeling wise, well definitely they have soul, but raw technical talent and depth. BB and Buddy are two of my favorites, but i wouldn't say blues is technically complex or hard in any manner of fashion. it just speaks to you, but i wouldn't say they are great guitar players for guitar playing sake... but rather great musicians. jimmy page definitely. the dude from The Police is pretty damn good too. same with whoever the old Metallica dude was/is too, probably because he was classically trained, as was EVH, which explains the type and flow to their songs.
