Well I didn't see the original throw-down but I say that's a STAND UP near-apology statment. No one's hurt. Lesson learned by Mr. Herrin. Let's move on.
Oddly, that's what I thought when I read it. As someone who reads more books in a month than most Americans read in a year, the letter reads like a press release from a public relations department, not like a sincere apology of any kind. The fact that it didn't get released until after Josh was suspended doesn't make anything better either. On that note though, I don't think he's evil. But I don't think he (or anyone defending him) can keep using the "he's just a 20-year-old-kid" excuse too much longer either. If he's old enough to vote, he's old enough to control his temper.
