TRIPLE Race Report from Most, Czech Republic, Nurburgring, and Oschersleben 2007

The U.S. team raced on the Nurburgring once again via the Seriensport event. Two weeks later, Reese fought in the IDM/R6 Cup at the Autodrom in Most, Czech Republic. During the Most race, two U.S. racers were competing at Oschersleben.

    The Nurburgring Saga:

Who: Jason, Jeff, Marson, Reese, Ron, Sean, and support from Aaron
    What: Seriensport Round 4
    Where: Nurburgring, Germany
Weather: Cool, Dry, and at times a little wet conditions

    Free Training/Dauerprufing:

All five riders ran together during the morning session. Marson had a small "get off" during this session, but was up and running within minutes. Jason, Jeff, and Sean ran smooth and continued quickening their lap times throughout the session. During a small portion of this morning session, the typical Nurburgring-Eifel region weather produced a slight rain fall. This weather change slowed the pace. Unfortunately a few riders fell victim to the weather change and crashed, however the U.S. team stayed the course and rode well.

Ron and Reese fell victim to similar mechanical problems. Ron's problems stemmed from a connector disengaging during installation of his refurbished engine he installed days before the race. Reese and his otherwise trusty R6 began the session good hitting the 1:39's. Unfortunately, Reese suffered from what was diagnosed as a battery/generator problem. The Pruessler race team was able to help out by providing a strong battery, therefore allowing Reese to finish the session, however he did not complete the required 28 laps and therefore would not receive points regardless of the outcome of the race.

    The race.....cheers and disappointment!!

The Race: Reese, Jason, Jeff and Marson started off really well. Jason was able to make his way through the pack and finish with a respectable 13th place out of 28 riders with a personal best lap time of a 1:40! Ron did his level best starting from the back row of the grid. He fought all the way up to 21st place with a lap time of 1:42. Note from RR racing: "with our on-going engine problems, the bike has been sold to the highest bidder." Jeff started from the 4th row, and pushed hard during the race, however, he had a couple of close battles that cost him valuable time. Jeff finished two spots behind Ron, and improved on his personal best time, clocking a 1:44! Marson also and a pretty good jump off the line, however his race pace wouldn't allow him to challenge for a top 20 finish. Marson's fastest lap was a 1:46, his fastest time at Nurburgring thus far.

Reese started from the 3rd row and pushed all the way up to 7th place in turn 1! Finally a great start!! Reese was able to pass two additional riders and by the second lap, he was in 5th place overall, and 1st in his class. With Peter Pruessler coming fast out of the last turn, Reese held his position all the way down the front straight, however the IDM guest rider was able to LATE LATE LATE break turn one. Reese continued his quick pace and was all but guaranteed the top podium spot amongst the B-class 600's! With only 3 laps remaining, Reese encountered an engine light indicating that he would experience the same problem he had in the morning session. Reese was determined to finish the race and kept pushing hard. Unfortunately, with only one lap remaining, his R6 died at the end of the long straightaway, ending any chance of a podium! Disgruntled and very disappointed, Reese stayed isolated from group to allow for 30 minutes of Whooooooosaaa!!

Quotes from Reese: "Today was very disappointing for me and my support team. Regarding the malfunction, we tried to isolate the electrical problem, but to no avail. I had a really good start and a great pace throughout the race. We ran really strong at the front and had achieved our goal with only a few laps remaining. I'm hoping we can isolate the problem and push for a 1st place finish!!!" Many thanks to Snooky, Elijah (for the push and support) and Peter Pruessler's racing team for their support!"

The Race Report from Most, Czech Republic:

    WHO: Reese
    WHAT: IDM/R6 Cup Race
    WHERE: MOST Czech Republic
    WEATHER: Cool, dry conditions

This was only the second time Reese has ran on the bumpy, uneven circuit. During his initial training, Reese was only able to get down to a 1:48.

Free Training: The first day was really helpful, Reese ran a normal front and rear setup during the first session, however, this track is brutal on rear tires, therefore, during the second free training session, Reese opted for a slick rear! Probably against the rules in the R6 cup, but anywayzzz! His fastest time on Friday was a 1:39.8. Not a bad start.

The Qualifying Disaster! Keen to get on the gas and hopefully drop his times into the 1:37's. Unfortunately, two things were against him. The electrical problem from Nurburgring and on the second lap of qualifying, Reese was hit from behind by another rider who lost control of his bike after trying to recover from a false neutral! Both riders tumbled into the gravel followed closely by their bikes. Reese was unhurt physically, but damage financially will come after the weekends damage ($) tally! The damage was mainly cosmetic, however, with only a few hours between the 1st and 2nd qualifying sessions, Michael and the R6 cup mechanics had only a short time to fix the electrical problems and get the bike ready. The second qualifying session was possible mainly due to duct tape and quick patch work. Reese wasn't able to better is time of a 1:41. This qualifying time earned Reese 28th on the grid.....not good!

The Race! This race was almost cancelled due to a large amount of oil on the track due to an IDM sidecar race. The track workers frantically laid down absorbent and scrubbed the track as quick as possible. After an hour delay, the R6 cup race was set to commence. In the meantime, Michael had worked another miracle and put the R6 back together and completed all fairing mounts delineating the need for a duct tape solution! :) The only set back during the warm up lap was the seat glue used to attach the seat pad didn't stick (thanks to the power shoppers at OBI). Therefore, Reese pulled off the flapping seat and ran the race without it!!

At the start of the race, Reese did the kangaroo start and after a second attempt, he was off and running. He dropped two place before the first turn, however, he quickly re-passed both riders. During the third lap, he made aggressive pass on the outside of the next to last turn. Aside from a couple of "moments", Reese brought the newly refurbished R6 home in 24th place with a fastest time of 1:39.6! Not bad seeing that the guys running 15 thru 17 place were running similar times.

The Race Report from Oschersleben, Germany:

    WHO: Jason and Sean
    WHAT: Seriensport Race Round 5
    WHERE: Oschersleben, Germany
    WEATHER: Cool, dry conditions

Official news report not available at time of press. Both Jason and Sean ran hard and uneventful Dauerprufing sessions.

Race: Jason started from the rear of the grid, however, soon found himself towards the front of the pack. Jason dropped his time consistently and was able to claim a respectable 13th place overall with a fast time of 1:41.0!!! Good show!! Sean (not to be overshadowed) ran really well and kept his goal of finishing the V-twin class for the year in the top 10! Sean sprinted to a 12th place finish, with his fastest lap being a 1:44.3.

    Upcoming Races:

    - Final IDM race, 15-16 September, Hockenheim
    - Final DMSB Supersport race 15-16 September, Oschersleben
    - Final Seriensport race 16 September, Nurburgring

***** The majority of the riders above will be racing in Oschersleben for the DMSB/Art Motor championship this coming weekend. It should be one hell of a weekend full of high speed battles! It's a long ride for most of us to Oschersleben, but if you have the opportunity, please come out and cheer us on!
