Ok, I need a new truck, but am stuck between the tundra and the tacoma... Anyone have either, and have coments, good or bad?

If I get the Tacoma, I want the Pre runner, with the V6, extended cab. I heard they get around 20mpg. If I go with the tundra, I would probobly end up with the 4.7L they have... anyone now the gas milage on that?

I want to be able to tow my bike easly, with an enclosed trailer. The tacoma has a 5000lb towing compasity, any experience?

    Thanks for any input...

My Tundra got 17mpg no matter what I did. If pulling a trailer it goes down significantly.

a guy here has the tundra. the only downsides when compared to my f150 are cost and fitty parts are bone cheap at every corner shop. the fitty pulls a little more, I think, but not enough to make a difference. the tundra rides a lot smoother, to say nothing about the cabin refinement. he says he gets around 20 m.p.g. I'd buy a tundra if I were in the market for a small full-size truck, but I've found since I've had the f-150 that bigger is almost always better. f250 diesel minimum on the next truck purchase.

There will be a new Tundra at the end of 2006. It will be quite a bit bigger and have more power. I had the current model and it was'nt so great towing. The new Tacoma with the big motor won't do much better than the Tundra. Maybe a hare better due to less weight.

+1 I love my 2000 Tundra I bought for $13,900, but it doesn't like trailer duty. :tut:

I dream of Ford F250 Powerstroke Diesels though.

I recently drove the new Tacoma....the Nissan Frontier sports a 265hp six...20hp more than Toy!

Personally, I would buy a damn American car if at all possible!

I work for GM-I will help anyone on this site save as much money as possible....more than Toyota can...to buy a better driving, better built...pulls more stuff truck.

I should have said that to begin with! Besides...your argument still puts money in pockets that live in this country!

I've got a 1994 Chevy S-10 with 4.3L V6. It pulls my 6X10 V-nose enclosed trailer but struggles with hills. It usually gets 20MPG when I behave and 13 MPG when pulling the trailer. I borrowed my dad's 1974 Chevy with 350 V8. It doesn't even seem to know the trailer is back there. It didn't slow down for any hill and would even speed up if I gave too much throttle. Down side is the 9MPG it got pulling the trailer. I don't know what the milage is normally but I though I wasn't going to have race entry money when I got there. Thank God for a gas card and an understanding wife. I thought about the Honda Ridgeline but I can't afford a new truck.

roy826ex Been around here a while

I've had both, 2000 Tundra with the V8, towed a trailer okay but mileage suffered. I now own a 2002 Tacoma Prerunner with the V6, towed a 5x8 enclosed okay as long as you were in drive no OD! 13 mpg sucked! Both trucks are well built and have never been in the shop. The Tundra was a smooth ride the Taco a little on the rough side. I love my Taco and almost upgraded to a new one with the 4.0 V6 but gas prices drove me away. My Taco as a daily commuter gets 20~21 mpg every week! The new Taco gets a little less at 16~17 mpg.

I'll be keeping the '02 Taco thank you very much:up:

Can't go wrong with any Toyota! Both are built in the US of A.

Nissan Titans are built right up the road from my house in Canton, Ms. never bought a nissan but there is alot of them out there.

I will be getting a used truck, whether the tacoma or tundra. And I am staying with Toyota. I have always wanted one, and if I am spending that much on something, I am going to get something that I REALLY want. Looks like I will be getting the tundra, with only a couple mpg difference at the most, I would rather have the bigger truck. They are also cheaper now, because everyone is getting rid of there V8's because of the gas prices.

Ive been looking and it looks like there is only a small diffence in price too, maybe 2k difference for the same year between tacoma and tundra....

Anything come out bad about any year tundra?

    Thanks for all the input..

Too small rotors on the 2000-2002 (I think)caused warpage, other than that there ain't much. Check out tundrasolutions.com for more info, the brake thing is easily fixed with service bulletins. I've got an '04 Double Cab and it's very roomy, rides great and all-around I couldn't be happier with it.

I had a 92 Nissan pickup....pulled my open trailer fine but sucked otherwise.

I got rid of it last year and got a Ranger V6 4 door. I thought it would do the job...it did, but didn't like it. It cries when I tow and it gets horrible gas mileage w/ a trailer.

Do yourself a favor and buy the big truck. I am going to dump my Ranger and get a diesel myself.........wish I had done it to begin with.

    I own a 04 Tundra 4 door and love it.No problems at 20,000+ miles.
I was in the same situation you are in now, deciding between the 2 trucks.I took home a comparably equiped Tacoma for a few days first and I really liked it to the point that I was ready to buy it.
Then I took the Tundra for a drive just to see the difference and it was all over , I bought the Tundra.
The extra room and smoother / quieter ride sold me.
The turning radius on the Tundra SUCKS! Get ready for alot of 3 pointers and running over stuff.
    I average about 14-17mpg.
