I seriously just laughed out loud at that. Luckily watching SNL from 1978 too so Evelyne didn't give me a funny look for it :D

We don't need to be taking more from the wealthy, we need to make it easier to start your own business.

People don't like $10/hr? Great, go start your own company and pay yourself $50/hr. You can pay your employees as much as you want.

So many complaints go away when the shoe is on the other foot.

I think the gov't (if it has any place in the free market) should facilitate 'unionized ownership.' Pool investor-employees, and have them all cast votes as to who should be CEO, who gets raises, etc.

Making the big decisions is so easy, right? Give it a shot.

I've read Stiglitz's ideas before and they're not any less Socialist leaning now than they have been in the past. Wealth redistribution is the answer for him. Some of his ideas concerning redoing the tax code is fair but his other ideas make no sense. With all the money that Bill Gates, and other billionaires have, not one red cent in their bankroll changes a single thing in the lives of anyone else. People like Gates do not constantly seek more wealth rather wealth comes to them simply because they think differently than 99% of other people and they invest in ventures that tend to make a profit instead of losing it. Without the wealth of the Gate's of the world the rest of us normal people would not be doing as well as we are. Remember, they supply the jobs and products that we have access to in order to make our lives better.

I'm glad that you've responded in this thread since your opinion is valuable. :)

Yes, I missed making my point in using Gate's name when I didn't finish my train of thought. The premise of the Socialists is that wealthy people, by holding all that wealth, are creating a detrimental effect on the rest of society. That is not even close to the truth. Yes, there are some wealthy people that are greedy and selfish to the point of being a drag on society but most of them are doing wonderful things with their wealth. Most of that wealth is being plowed right back into the economy expanding their businesses, hiring new employees, creating new products, donating to worthy causes, etc..

If you took a person like this Stiglitz around to a dozen billionaires homes or businesses he could not point out one single one of them that was costing him a penny, preventing him from making more money, or bettering his life. Not one. From all that I've seen, read, and heard, coming from these "equality' minded people, all I see is simply jealously. The billionaires have something that the Socialists want. Money. The wealthy use money to actually advance their own lives, which also advances the lives of others, while a Socialist uses the money to buy votes which results in more power for themselves.

With all due respect, shut the fuck up.

There is no possible way to pay your way through school to get an engineering degree. No fucking way.

    Totally.

Tuition increases 9% annually and it's the students fault.

    You guys are fucked.

    Did you learn much math?

Tuition and housing costs are now about $30,000/yr where I got my degree. If you have a job that nets you that after tax only working 4-5 months of the year why are you even going to school?

Simple ... you don't want to work in a weld shop all your life.

Of course, I'm just referring to 2 of the welders on my weekend crew that are currently pursuing their degrees in engineering and working FT so they don't have to go into debt to do so. But wtf do any of us know? You already stated definitively that it's not possible to do.

I probably paid $30-35k for the degree, tuition only. Cost of living was above that. In the summer I worked my ass off to pay for school. During school I went to school during the week and worked weekends.

You said no, possible way which turns out isn't accurate.

    *cough* 2008. . .Great Recession. . .*cough*

You're telling me that Sheldon Adelson and the Koch brothers are Socialists?

There's a bunch of bias in your assumptions - most people who work their way through college have multiple jobs year round while carrying their course load. . .it's one of the reasons they have little sympathy to those who say it's impossible (rightly so - the personal sacrifice is high. . .and so is the stress and sleep deprevation).

When I went to school it was possible, but really borderline, to work hard all summer and 1-2 days a week during the school year to cover my costs.

Tuition and housing costs have doubled since I graduated. Are summer and weekend jobs paying twice what they did ten years ago?

Again..... tuition increases 9% annually. Telling someone to "work hard and you can do it" is grade A bullshit.
