it really depends on the tracks you will frequent as to what bike... but generally speaking- faster "big bike" type tracks then the RS 125 based machine.. shorter mini oriented tracks the CR/YZ/ RM85 are more suited. best bang for the buck is a 85 dirt conversion on 17's. (didn't intend to cast a shadow over your bike sales Tryce)
Metrakit makes some fast bikes, but they're not very good for tight kart tracks. Then, you've gotta deal with parts availability. From what I know, the only dealer worth dealing with is in Canada.
I have an 04 NSR50 that I bought but not sure I am going to get to use that I might sell. If interested PM me.

Not to disrespect what anyone else has said, I've seen fast kids win on Motards or Roadrace chassis bikes, but what do you want to accomplish? If your child wants to be a roadracer, I would put him on roadrace chassis on a mini track. It seems different areas of the country favor roadrace chassis's vs. motard style chassis. If you are also planning on motarding, then go with the motard style bike. We started with a pocketbike and then a NSR. We have pretty large NSR fields out here, so they are a great place to start and hold their value very well. Out here they seem to range in price from $14-1700. After that, I put him on the KX65 dirtbike we had with street tires. He liked it until he rode an RS chassis bike with a KX65 in it. Many who go the dirtbike method end up spending a considerable amount of money modifying the bike to work better for roadracing. Shocks, rearsets, clip-on's etc., which is another reason to go with a roadrace chassis as they already come with amazing suspension from the factory. I would also suggest you buy a bike that is already setup for roadracing with the proper size motor you want. Meaning, I wouldn't buy a RS125 and then pay for the conversion, etc. as it is much cheaper to buy one already setup. Same with the motard, if you go that route, pick one up with the wheels, brakes, suspension, different triple clamps, etc. already done, you will be miles ahead on headaches and expense.
I'm a newbie when it comes to racing, especially 2 stroke bikes but from what I understand you have an 85cc stroke in a 125 frame?? Is there a reason why you went down in displacement?
It's for the mini class. It lets kids (and even adults) get a start on a road racing bike without throwing them into the shark tank.
Kawasaki had the AR80 a while back, it would smoke a Honda MB5 or a YSR50. Might be hard to find one though. Mark Badger
thats the thing he wants to roadrace so i want to keep it at that level - he has ridden dirt since he was 5 an now is 11 has done 2 trackdays on my SDG107 with supermoto tires on it an got 6th in his first race ever starting last(12th)! basically right now i am open to anything if the price is right cus i figure any experience is better than none at all!! most of the kids are on nsr50's and a couple on mini motards! i feel all the bikes are competitive at that age an experience level!! i have gotten alot of emails and PM's with alot of info an personal experiences in racing and thank you all for your input - i value everyone's opinion's!!! like i said price will ultimately drive my purchase i also have a 1997 KX65 i will be selling in the next week or two - its getting new piston an rings right now! Wow, nice bike What's involved in doing a conversion like this? Can you retain the stock engine mounts (i.e., keep frame intact) and use some adapter plates/fittings to mount the smaller engine? If I had the $, I'd be all over this... who am I kidding, I'm still learning how to ride my TZ125!
Other options K well both my kids came up on italian pocket bikes. They stikll race those out here but in your area you would have to look up a local club. They are super fast and teach corner speep and barking. My boy has moved on to the RS125. There are also metrakits which are much better bikes than the NSR as far as handle and speed but they are tougher to get parts for. I would contact Dan Pierce at Pod Performance in illinois he is a metrakit guy and reliable for parts. You can also get dan at [email protected] Also go to Foxes site in Canada http://www.amra.ca/ oh and one last one http://www.teamcalamari.com in Cali has a link to all sorts of miniroadracing stuff. lots of options outside those bikes. We converted a derbi for the track still have that. Hope that answers what you were looking for if not hit me up a pm and a nuber we can talk been doing the minis stuff for many yawers. i moved on but still know the players. And no this is not addys I am just trying to help out a guy asking questions ;-)
