So, I am converting my 2003 Ducati 999 into a track only bike.

I've done the following or will do the following:

-Suspensions: Front (Ohlins R&T) Rear (Ohlins 3-way)
-Bodywork: Will order a set of Sharkskinz and fairing stay
-Gearing: Will order 520 kit (-1/+2)
    -Msc: will order crash protectors

Anyone else recommend "must do" items?

    Thanks

Rear sets. Stock would drag for me.
Spare wheels, forged are nice to have.
Stock front rotors on base 999 are not full floating. Heat. Full floaters or lovely CMCs are nice.
    Fairing stay.
    Safety wire-able drain plug.
    Hugger for your new shock.
Case protector at front sprocket. (make one, those for sale suck)
    Slippy clutch is nice.
    Light tech gas lid.

Corner fast and avoid wild lines cause ponies belong to somebody else.

    Best gear you can buy.

If I would have done this from the start, I would have avoided a broken foot and a hole in my elbow.

rearsets... the stockers have zero grip; you'll slip off 'em before you drag them ;)

crash protection... sturdy clutch cover, waterpump cover; these are vulnerable areas that will ruin your day and possibly others'

A fan to dry the inside of your helmet is nice too.

Whatever you do, don't go out on worn out tires.

Sell the Ducati, buy a used raced prepped R6, bank the extra cash for track days and tires.

I was going to post the same thing with the exception of changing the R6 to a GSXR

Well, I just sold a track only GSXR750 I used for a year. I've had the 999 for years and the bike just sits there as I do 90% trackdays only now. So, I decided to use it. It's not worth too much in the used market...might as well. But I understand in the long run, it will carry a higher running cost.

Yeah I wasnt trying to be a smartass (well not entirely :D ) I've seen what it takes to keep a Duc on the track and comparatively speaking you'll be better off taking what you can get for it and buying a pre prepped bike. Now if you are just head over heels for the Duc (I've had a few, I know) then let your heart lead and your wallet will follow.

I am definitely aware the Smart Money was to keep that GSXR....I don't race like you guys, I am just a trackday guy, and I find the Duc "fun" to ride and that's pretty much all I want to get out of it...a fun track bike.

Not to beat a dead horse, but an SV would have a lot of the twin qualities that make the Duc enjoyable, but it's cheaper (as in about the cost of the parts you'll be buying for the Duc and way easier on tires). That said, I think SV's make a better racebike than track day bike.

But, if you're not interested in something else, the Duc will be good fun. You should consider racing if you never have. It's not what people claim it is. It's just good fun. It's nice to be out there with people who are going similar speed.
