What happened then? With the exception of t1, the walls aren't really in places that are likely to cause major injury, but more undue damage to the bike if you were to go down and slide into them.
I don't want to get too far off topic due to the seriousness of the thread but a bike generally goes a lot further than the rider. The places you'd hit a wall at Gateway are where you transition from infield to oval and aren't very fast sections of the track. The exception is T1 - it's the fastest and most dangerous portion - you're literally threading the needle between two concrete walls at very high speed.
agree w ryoung mostly. T1 is the hairiest section but transitioning from the goat trail to the front straight one could get tangled with another rider, hit the chicane curbs or otherwise somehow drive straight into the wall if you got the transition wrong, and there is little time to react.
I was there in that race. The accident that happened could have happened anywhere, did not involve a wall. I'm not going to say anything else about the incident just please keep in mind this is a very difficult time for friends and family.
Fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck! I'm so sorry to hear this. Chris's dad Todd, posts on our local forums all the time. They both race with MCRA here in the mid west. Todd is always so excited about racing with Chris. This is terrible news. With utmost respect, RIP Chris. http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=peSZqFyzrvQ
