He did a great one with Garrett Reisman #1425, an astronaut that spent 95 days in the space station. If you like to get your nerd on that was a pretty fascinating conversation. Quickest two hours of my day yesterday

His latest with Krystal Ball and Saager Enjeti is pretty good. There's a short YouTube clip of a recent one where he talks about his covid.

Past Glory I still have several AVON calendars from the 90's

I remember an interview he gave back when he hosted 'Fear Factor'. He said that the whole theme of reality TV was "What will you put in your mouth for money"? That's also the true essence of porn.

That show started with promise, but did just turn into what animal dong will they eat this week. I think I only watched for maybe a season before it went stupid.

I had this debate with another person on Facebook recently. if the artists / movie studios stood together and told the streaming industry to fuck itself services like Spotify and pandora wouldn’t be such overnight juggernauts. They opened Pandora’s box with those deals and have no one to blame but themselves. They took pennies on the dollar because they were so afraid of piracy. well the technology has moved passed a viable loss from piracy. Most phones/TVs/tablets are closed systems and so are platforms.

The record labels and movie studios make their money so they don't care. Not as much cash as they used to make from downloads and even less then they did with CDs but with the 360 deals they sign, they found new ways to make up the loss.

The artists are the ones f@cked.

The musical landscape now is not controlled by the labels. Most artists make their money independent of the labels. Of course the mega stars are still beholden to the labels but the days of 3 point record contracts are long gone. artists never made their money on sales anyway. In MOST cases the costs to produce the record came out of the artists measly 3 points. They could actually end up OWING money on a record because of this. The bulk was always made on touring on merchandise. The reasons rockstars aren’t making money is because NO ONE listens to new rock anymore. And NO ONE goes to shows.

check out a rap concert though. It’s PACKED. they makin coin. Merchandising? Fuhghettaboutit

That's why the 360 deals are being pretty much the only deals offered. With a 360, the labels now get a cut of the touring money. All of it. Merch, tickets, sponsorship of the tour, everything. And they get it first so if you think you can pay for tour expenses with merch and those super fan boy packages, think again.

Why are the indie punk labels still going strong? Vinyl and bigger acts and not enslaving their artists (although the shit deals have started to trickle into there).

and rap, holy f@ck, that's one of the worst for exploitation of an artist. Sign with the medium and larger labels, chances are you are f@ck forever.

Your song catalog and music publishing are the last chances for an artist to make money (short of starting their own labels and DIY). It's whores and pimps and the pimp always gets his money.

but is easier now than in any point in history to make real money as an independent artist and control your own shit. Look at snow tha product. She is fucking BALLIN and has no label, no manager, no contracts. If you’re a music artist who can’t make money today you’re just lazy, have zero talent, or have no idea how to navigate the modern industry. 360 deals are for people with stars in their eyes. Check out “immigrants we get the job done”

Yeah, but how do you get to that point? I look at a band like Starcrawler. Awesome band. Shit, One of the best newish bands I've heard in 10 years.

They seem to be doing it their way, slowly and not buying into the majors 360 crap. . . for now. I can see them going the No Doubt route once they get the wrong person in their circle.

Check them out, I think you'd dig 'em. the vocalist does need a few meals though. lol!

Literally just read an article where 21 savage claims to own ALL of his masters. He was platinum before ever having been signed. He has a 70/30 split with the label in HIS favor. As I said, you’re doing something wrong if you bend over in this day and age (in music)

I liked the interviews with his buddy Mike Baker as well as his interview with author Tom O’Neill. I also enjoyed his show with Jocko and Tulsi Gabbard and his show with Dave Goggins.

The MBAs are going to win. The bigger part of the 360 deals is the venues and the production / promotion. Look at the deals Live Nation builds - they own the venues, they do the promotion, provide the tour management and logistics, handle the ticket sales (through their deals with Ticketmaster and direct), etc etc. once you get to be a midsize act you have to sign on the line if you want the venues and everything with them.

There are less than 10 promoters who control 95% of the major venues.
