Jerry Settle was involved in a hard crash at Talladega on Sunday, and was helicoptered out to the UAB Trauma Center. I know a lot of you know Jerry, and I hadn't seen any mention of his accident here, so I thought I would spread the word so more of us can keep him in our prayers. I do not have any details on his condition, but here is a message posted from one of Jerry's friends: This afternoon I talked to Charlotte. Jerry is in the Trauma ICU at University of Alabama - Birmingham. Jerry is on a ventilator and under fairly heavy sedation. However she did say that he was doing everything that they asked of Jerry, to facilitate his recovery. She has no idea how long he will be there. His daughters and pastor have been there. At this time the only visitors allowed are immediate family. I'll update as I learn more. -- Greg "Wide Load" Miller Owner of A Red BMW R1150RT (Scarlet Too) I pull a Time Out Trailer (Burg Mueller) behind it Member: Christian Motorcyclist Association, BMWRA, Indy BMW Club, BMWMO
Thanks Trent. I'm sorry I didn't get to meet Jerry at JGPR, when he ran with us there, but he's in our thoughts and prayers. With all the guys getting hurt recently, it makes me realize how important it is to take a few minutes at the track to say hello to each other. I think of all you other racers as friends, but it would be nice to let you know once in a while.
Sorry to hear about his crash, but glad he is at UAB. Thats a great place, spent some "quality time" there a few years ago.
Sorry to hear of jerrys crash, He's a good guy and always very friendly and helpfull. Hope he has a good recovery. He is in my thoughts.
Update From www.AHRMA.org : "AHRMA roadracer Jerry Settle had to be transported by helicopter after a hard crash on Sunday, March 28, at Talladega Gran Prix Raceway. He suffered a broken collarbone, broken ribs, broken finger and bruising of the brain. We have been told he is on a ventilator but is conscious, responsive and improving daily. We don't have information on the hospital where get-well cards can be sent, but Jerry's home address is 314 Bluebird Lane, Dickson, TN 37055-2302."
Jerry, everyone at Touring Sport and Ivey and Elaine has you in there Thoughts, hope you get well sone. Frank
Things are looking a little better. Here is the latest on Jerry Settle as of 4/3/04 It sounds as if he is geetting better little by little.. Lets hope for the best.. Here is the address at the hospital for Jerry: Jerry Settle (Patient) TBICU #11 619 19th Street South Birmingham, AL 35249 Friends of Jerry & Charlotte: I have good news tonight. A room, in the hospital, has been secured for Charlotte. It is room #316. The telephone in the room is (205) 975-1858. She will be much more comfortable and safe there. Many of you have asked if you could help them in this time and I'm able to tell you how you can do that. Many of you know that Jerry and Charlotte are self employed. This puts the brakes on their income. Realizing that their living costs right now are daily mounting, and that there will be uncovered medical bills down the road, a fund has been setup by the Birmingham Christian Motorcycle Association chapter. To give appropriate accountability a separate bank account has been established. Jerry and Charlotte have been very generous of their time and resources going to rallies and races, conducting services, marrying people, and providing counsel. Now we have the opportunity to give back to them. Their home church, in Dickson, TN, has stepped to helping out with some of their immediate needs also. Checks should be made out to: Son's Dixie Riders They should be mailed to: Maureen Merrifield P.O. Box 101 Chelsa, AL 35043 The memo line of the check should clearly state Jerry Settle. Maureen has agreed to receive the checks, cash them, and get cash to Jerry and Charlotte, on a timely basis. This will allow you to have the safety of sending checks in the mail but Charlotte won't have to figure out when and where to cash them. After he is transferred out of Birmingham any unused balance in the account will be given to Jerry and Charlotte. As a side comment I would add that I have learned the Maureen rides a K1200LT Trike. As to Jerry's medical status. They are starting to wean him off of the respirator. The longer a person is on the respirator the longer it takes to get them off of it. They are reducing his pain medication. They will provide an "on demand" pain medication system where he can administer his own, when he needs it. Tonight Charlotte told me that he is running a little fever and that they think he may have a mild touch of pneumonia (All these are fairly common to someone with his injuries.) They ran some cultures on him and will put him on antibiotics once they get those results. She was told the bruising to his brain is small, is not really bloody, and is comparable to a bruise that you might get on your leg. Anyone who is receiving this announcement feel free to forward it on to any others that would be of interest. If individuals want to be included in future announcements drop me a email at [email protected] -- Greg "Wide Load" Miller Owner of A Red BMW R1150RT (Scarlet Too) I pull a Time Out Trailer (Burg Mueller) behind it Member: Christian Motorcyclist Association, BMWRA, Indy BMW Club, BMWMOA
We're pulling for you, preacher man! We know you've got too big of a mission in life to let this get you down.
Out of the woods As information gets passed... Friends: I had told you I wouldn't update for a couple of days unless there was a significant change. WELL!!!!! - he woke up today, recognized his visitors, and talked. He didn't know where he was, or why he was there, so Carol Dickerson, who was there, filled in some of the blanks for him. They think they may be moving him to a lower level of Intensive Care soon (maybe tomorrow). After a while there he will go to a regular room. He is off of the ventilator but is getting some oxygen. For those of you that might be able to see him here is the schedule for visitation. There is a half hour at the following times: 10:30 AM, 2:00 PM, 5:30 PM, 8:30 PM, 12:30 PM. You will need to be accompanied by a family member. I believe it is limited to 2 persons at a time, so some time sharing may be required. When he goes to a regular room normal visitation rules will apply. If you want to go, here is a link that will take you to a map to get to the hospital. http://maps.yahoo.com/pmaps?csz=Bir...QMi.hS0ySpg-&zoomin=yes&BFKey=&resize=l&mag=9 If you can't make that link work the hospital is at 619 19th St S Birmingham, AL 35249-1900. -- Greg "Wide Load" Miller Owner of A Red BMW R1150RT (Scarlet Too) I pull a Time Out Trailer (Burg Mueller) behind it Member: Christian Motorcyclist Association, BMWRA, Indy BMW Club, BMWMOA
Heading home soon! From our front line reporter ...... Friends: The news continues to be really good. At this point the expectation is that Jerry will be discharged to go home by the weekend. He still tires easily and isn't eating quite as much as the doctors would like, but is walking around with minimal assistance, and is completely lucid. He was visited by his good friends Rodger and Janice Ragan today and that was most pleasant for everyone. All reports are that he is getting back to his old self. He doesn't remember anything about the accident but I'm sure his AHRMA friends can fill those details in for him. At this point financial support is still needed and appreciated but should be sent, from now on, to the fund setup by his daughter LaDonna. Checks should be made out to LaDonna Evans. The address is: LaDonna Evans 110 Needham Ln. Burns, TN 37029 The memo line should say Jerry Settle Recovery Fund If you were planning to go see Jerry in Alabama I would not plan to do that after Friday AM. Jerry and Charlotte will need a little time to get re-established, at home, upon his release. Get Well cards, from now, on should be sent to their home. That address is: Jerry Settle 314 Bluebird Ln Dickson, TN 37055-2302 I will probably make one final update to you. That will be after he has been released. One behalf of Jerry, Charlotte, and his family we want to thank you fervently for your prayers, your financial support, and the care you have shown them. Truly you have sustained them in this difficult time. Blessings to all who see this message, -- Greg "Wide Load" Miller Owner of A Red BMW R1150RT (Scarlet Too) I pull a Time Out Trailer (Burg Mueller) behind it Member: Christian Motorcyclist Association, BMWRA, Indy BMW Club, BMWMOA I'm just passing the information.
