The Spies Rule doesn't apply to replacements. Don't you remember those Japanese guys who have gotten replacement rides as a reward for a job well done in Japan?
I thought as much but I couldn't remember who the Japanese riders were. Some of them have GP experience if I remember right.
If those guys raced GP before, it certainly wasn't MotoGP. Ever heard of Akyoshi before this year? I forget the other one.
Really? Damn. How many of those outside before this year Japan? Either way, that still is not enough to circumvent the rookie rule.
move colin up to fiat Yamaha, and Josh Hayes Tech 3 yamaha...they deserve it. We gotta see what happens with Spies too. He might need more than just a week to recover. He sounds kinda hurt and if he has a concussion, he might not be able to go again in 5 days.
Akyoshi is the current JSB Champion and has spent some time as the Honda GP test rider. Itoh is the other rider. He has raced many GPs, including the 500 2 strokes (team mates with Doohan and Beatie in '93). Both of these guys teamed up with Kiyanari to win the Suzuka 8 Hour this year.
I know Itoh from back when he was a full-time GP racer. First guy to hit 200 mi./h at Hockenheim on that special development NSR500, if I remember correctly. The other Japanese riders who have gotten wild-card rides in the last couple of years have never competed in the entire series.
