Got family at my house right now who are all from Utah and have very deep roots in law enforcement there. Mentioned this story and got the unanimous response: "That's Utah for ya".
Unless they've had serious, documented problems with violators in the past after such events it really is a bit much. The number one priority should be ensuring proper and safe traffic control for the people leaving. And if you're going to do spot 'safety' inspections, it better be for every vehicle in line - not just the motorcycles.
Completely unsubstantiated opinion on my part, but sounds as though the cops were trying to keep the stupid down. Happened several times at Mido Ohio in the 90's.
