Hotbodies Bodywork Review 08 CBR 1000rr

    I picked up a 08 CBR1000rr for a new race bike this season and it needed a set of bodywork. I originally picked up a set of cheap off-brand bodywork on another forum. I spent a good 4-5 evenings mounting it up, buy the time I finished I decided it just wasn't going to work, luckily I got it cheap.

    I had read some of the Hotbodies threads on the beeb and based on how Roger stood behind his product I though I would give it a try. I had a set of Hotbodies on my R6 back in 04. It was my first set of bodywork so I didn't have much to compare it to. Sense then I have used Sharkskins, Attack and Optimal on various race bikes.

    I emailed Roger and he set me up with a set of bodywork. The bodywork for the CBR1000rr is set up for use on HRC bikes. He explained to me that I may need to do a little trimming on the ducts of the lowers to clear my specific headers (Leo Vince in this case). He also explained that I can either buy HRC mounting brackets for the lowers or I can make them myself.

    I received the bodywork a week later. It came in the standard big bodywork box. Each part was wrapped in bubble wrap. Upon first inspection everything looked good. I didn't see any obvious defects. No weird cracking or anything. I was surprised by how light and flexible the bodywork felt, especially the upper and lower. Maybe even a little too thin in places. I guess I will see over time how it holds up. The superbike tail, tank cover and front fender were more rigid.

    I started by mounting the front fender. I drilled the holes and it mounted up just fine, nothing major to report. Then I moved to the tank cover. Again, I put it place, lined up the mounting points with the screw holes and drilled. It fit up great. After that was the superbike tail. It slides over the subframe and lines up with the same mounting location as the tank cover. I matched the mounting holes from the back of the tank cover with the mounting points of the tail and screwed in place. I really like the look of the superbike tail.

    Last but not least was the uppers and lowers. I predrilled and mounted the two pieces together before I put them on the bike as instructed by Roger. I started by putting the upper on the bike. I held it to the fairing stay using clamps while I made sure everything was lined up correctly. I drilled the two side mounting holes and everything was fine. Then I moved to the upper mounts at the stay, again the mounting points for the stay were perfect. One thing to note was the ram air tubes. I have aftermarket fiberglass ram air tubes and they fit very well.

    The lowers did require some work. I did have to trim some the air ducts to clear my headers, but it was nothing a pass with the cut-off wheel couldn't take care of quickly. I also had to build some brackets for the rear of the lowers. I picked up some aluminum strip from Home Depot and bent it to fit. The chain side was no big deal. I did have to spend a little time on the exhaust side to make sure the can doesn't touch the bodywork. It is still very close so I will probably put some of the heat reflective tape on the inside. Hopefully it won't cause burn spots.

    Overall I was very impressed by the finish, it will only require a quick scuff before I paint. The fit was good, the lowers required a little work but I knew that going in. At this price point I would recommend a set of Hotbodies. Thanks Roger.
