I have ridden fast Busas, I've raced an AMA Superbike GSXR 1000, I have done lots of things that don't make "sense" to folks.... But until you have picked up a 880, started it, and put it in a tree to cut, don't judge.... Dave K, have you ever ran a 880? I have.
I would like to use it to start milling some planks. That is the main reason I was debating it. I tried it with another saw and it didn't do that great of a job cutting some big slabs of oak. i've never really done any slab cutting but its really popular so I wouldn't mind trying to make some money off the craze while its going. I have a bunch of large black walnut trees down on my property now from enlarging our meadow.
There’s plenty of info out there on modifying the OEM silencer on modern chainsaws. The big thing, I suppose, is getting fuel delivery right. If you spent the extra money and went with an M-tronic from Stihl, then it’s no problem. I called my MS 362 the “tree assassin” before the mod, now, it’s just a “forest holocauster.” And not for the reason you’re thinking! ... It’s because it uses a lot more gas.
If you're going to use it for slabbing, then yeah hot rod it. If just straight cutting and not running it for a living then why bother. Ran a 660 a couple months ago bolted to a slabbing mill milling up some red maple. That was fun.... Coulda used more saw, but got the job done.
I've lugged an 064 hither and yon over the forest collecting fire scars. Its a redunkulous piece of machinery. I've "handled an 880 in the shop, and Cam is absolutely right, its not like a normal chainsaw at all. Its almost always best used resting the tail on the ground and letting the saw do the work via gravity. It's that powerful and that heavy. OK, that's a whole 'nother ballgame.
Dude, why would I do something stupid like that? My days of slogging around in the woods, cutting, drying, splitting and stacking wood for my cut of $100 was over way back. Shit no!
