I just finished listening to a talk by Dr. Tom Curran "For men Only". He asked two questions that were kind of easy and the whole group seemed to agree as well. I thought this might be interesting for some. Here we go.

Of the seven Cardinal sins: Pride, Gluttony, Greed, Lust, Sloth, Envy, Anger, which "one" is the most constant and the hardest for "MEN" to control?

So which one do you think is mot prevlant for women?

I am proud I can still move my arm. :Poke:

I voted for lust also I do not know why there is one pride and one lust.

Greed, anger, pride, and envy aren't any fun so why bother with them. with the amount of time I spend on this bbs sloth may be my big sin.

I would have to say anger for me.
I'm pissed that I'm not allowed to exploit the other carinal sins.

Tom says, that if you give in to lust, the affection that accompanies sexual intimacy with our wives will decrease. It's all about treating women as objects. Those thoughts eventually affect the way we preceive and look at women, the way we talk to them and treat them. I never thought how far reaching something like that can be.

Sin is both addictive and progressive.

Ingatius Loyola teaches that if we cannot deny ourselves that which is good, we will not deny ourselves in that which is not good. ie. sinfulness. So fasting and abstaining is a good practice after all.

By the way the sin most women have problems with is envy or jealously. I kinda nailed that one even though my wife didn't immediately own up. :)

    Cheers,
    Gene

I have found it easier to work at denying myself guilt... than sin.

    How does this work?

I associate guilt with doing something that I know to be wrong.

It's pretty straight forward. Rather than focus a great deal of energy trying not to sin... you work at trying not to feel guilty about sinning.

When you make progress in one area, you make progress in all areas. When you regress in one area you regress in all areas.

I like the challenge, impossible though it seems to be. I am coming to realize that the 12 step process is true. Addiction is addiction, alcohol, drugs, sex, lying, greed....we all suffer from them in one form or another and in varying degrees. You can either try to take control or let it control you.

If you don't think this is true, try denying yourself something you enjoy for a period of time. 'Difficult is an understatement. :)

"Addiction is addiction, alcohol, drugs, sex, lying, greed....we all suffer from them in one form or another and in varying degrees."

Not that I agree, but going along with the "we all suffer from them..." concept, isn't something that is manifested in everyone defined simply as.... "normal"?

If so, wouldn't it be pretty pointless to seek the cure for being normal?

Furthermore, it is worth the effort to separate "habit" from "addiction". I have a habit of taking a shower every morning and it upsets my harmony if I miss it. Same with breakfast. And, I don't relish the idea of becoming cured of either.

But neither is like being addicted to alcohol or tobacco, both of which I have seen through the bloodshot eyes of the truely devout.

Perhaps we should not ignore the possiblilty that guilt itself might become an addiction... or at least a habit... ;)

I think you are missing the point on denial or poking fun at me. :)

During Lent, we Catholic's choose to give up (deny ourselves) certain things. Sort of like a New Year's resolution but only for 40 days. Some people give up trival things, some try to change their lifestyle and conquer negative things about themselves. Personally for me, I vow to quit cursing (very very hard for me) but it would be great if I never cursed again so that is a lifestyle change for me. That forces me to look inward on why I curse. What prevokes that behavior in me and what must I do to aviod that situation. I also give up trivial things like soft drinks, tea, beer, and try to stick to water only. Sometimes I am very successful for the 40 days, sometimes not. But I always fall back into my regular routine, sooner or later, like an alcoholic. That first rootbeer tastes nasty and I wonder why I drink that horrible stuff, but not long afterwards, I'm having 3 a day as usual. As for cursing, I say, that's my relief valve and everyone else does it, so that's normal, why should I try to change that. That's why I refered to sin as addiction. I justify my actions. No one else thinks I have a problem so I must be normal, why change?

These things I try to accomplish are most difficult me. I have been able to beat them for a while but never able to eliminate them from my life completely. I get up every day and try again. :)

    Take Care,

Isn't it a bit more usual for lent to be giving up meat, not root beer?

Anyway, I noticed if you type "catholic guilt" at Google, it gives 163,000 hits.

It looks like about all but 10 of them are porn sites.

    That makes sense. :D

    Sorry, Gene.

I guess I was poking fun at you. :Poke:

I do understand the idea of religious denial for Lent or Ramadan, and that sacrifice is a common facet of many religions. No problem here. :)

Have you ever denied yourself something you really enjoy for an extended period of time. Your body screams for it, lies to you concerning it, and trys every trick it can to get what it craves.

We fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday, and abstain from meat on every friday during lent. I abstain from meat, every friday whether it is lent or not, It reminds me that i must do penance for my sins.

So you've checked out 162,990 porn sites. You've been busy. :D

    Take care and be well.
